About the Book

Jean Antoine René Édouard Corbière, né à Brest (Finistère) le 1er avril 1793 et mort à Morlaix (Finistère) le 27 septembre 1875, est un marin, armateur, journaliste et écrivain français, considéré comme le père du roman maritime en France. Extrait Un jour que la brume d'automne, chassée par un vent d'Ouest assez fort, commençait à s'étendre sur les flots qui s'agitent presque continuellement entre l'île d'Ouessant et le terrible Raz-des-Saints, une petite barque de pilote, surmontée d'une misaine et d'un taille-vent, tournoyait au milieu des lames, dans le passage de l'Iroise, attendant les navires qui voudraient entrer à Brest ou relâcher à Camaret. En courant çà et là des bordées, tantôt au Nord-Nord-Ouest, tantôt au Sud-Sud-Ouest, le vieux patron du bateau s'entretenait gravement, la barre en main, avec les deux marins qui composaient son équipage. C'étaient tous trois de ces hommes simples, moitié cultivateurs, moitié matelots, comme la plupart de ces braves gens qui naissent sur les îlots et les rivages de la Basse-Bretagne. L'île d'Ouessant, posée avec son phare célèbre, à sept lieues de Brest, en sentinelle avancée de l'Océan, était la patrie du pilote Tanguy et de ses deux compagnons La conversation qu'ils avaient entamée en bas-breton, en courant leurs bordées, roulait sur différents objets, monotone et inconstante, comme les vagues qui battaient la petite barque. Biographie Les années de formation La famille Corbière est originaire du Haut-Languedoc (le hameau de Valès, aujourd'hui sur la commune du Bez, à l'est de Castres, dans le Tarn). À la naissance d'Édouard, son père est capitaine d'infanterie de Marine. Sa mère, Jeanne-Renée Dubois, est née à Morlaix en 1768. Édouard est le troisième de quatre enfants. Orphelin de père en 1802, le jeune Édouard n'a alors d'autre choix que d'entrer dans la Marine pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. Mousse en 1804, novice en 1806, aspirant dès 1807, Édouard Corbière connaît la dure expérience d'un ponton britannique, celui de Tiverton (Devon) en 1811-1812. Il est écarté de la Marine à la Restauration en raison de ses opinions libérales.
