" ... On peut se faire une idée de l'isolement du monde solaire au milieu des espaces peuplés d'étoiles par une comparaison avec des étendues qui nous sont familières. Supposons l'orbite de Neptune représentée par l'enceinte de Paris, l'orbite de la terre occupera au centre de cet espace une aire à peu près égale à celle de la place de la Concorde, et la distance de l'étoile la plus rapprochée de nous, - Alpha du Centaure, - sera figurée par une longueur de plus de 30,000 kilomètres, c'est-à-dire par le chemin que fait un navire qui va du Havre en Chine par le cap Horn. Or l'étoile dont il s'agit ici est exceptionnellement près de nous; celle qui la suit immédiatement dans l'ordre des distances, - la 61e du Cygne, - est déjà deux fois plus éloignée, et toutes les autres qui ont été examinées jusqu'à ce jour sont en général situées à des distances beaucoup plus considérables. Voilà donc l'étendue de la mer sans rivages où flotte l'archipel solaire, et voilà l'éloignement des premières îles étrangères à notre système. Et ce sont de pareilles distances qu'il faut estimer par deux visées prises de deux points opposés de l'orbite de la terre; pour rester dans notre comparaison, c'est comme si de deux coins de la place de la Concorde on braquait deux lunettes sur le feu d'un phare situé bien plus loin de nous que la Chine. En effet, c'est la différence des directions où nous voyons une étoile à deux époques opposées de l'année, quand la terre passe d'une extrémité à l'autre de son orbite, qui nous fait connaître la distance où cette étoile se trouve de nous. La moitié de cette différence est ce qu'on appelle la parallaxe annuelle de l'étoile. C'est absolument de la même manière, c'est-à-dire par deux directions observées des deux extrémités d'une base de longueur connue, que l'on fixe la position d'un objet terrestre lorsqu'on fait un levé topographique..."
