Les Quarante-cinq (Tome III) (+Biographie et Bibliographie) (Matte Cover Finish): L'action se passe entre 1585 et 1586, treize ans après le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy. Ayant succédé à son frère Charles IX, Henri III règne depuis dix ans sans avoir réussi à calmer l'agitation politique et religieuse qui livre le royaume aux factions. En fait Dumas mélange allègrement les dates. Une partie de l'intrigue fait référence à la septième guerre de religion dite guerre des amoureux avec la prise de Cahors par Henri de Navarre, cinq ans plus tôt. Guillaume le Taciturne, assassiné en 1584, est toujours bien vivant dans le roman de Dumas, et s'il est exact qu'il encouragea le duc d'Anjou à convoiter la couronne des Pays-Bas et que celui-ci devint duc de Brabant en 1582, c'est en 1583, et non en 1585 ou 1586 qu'eut lieu l'attaque d'Anvers à laquelle le duc de Joyeuse ne participa pas, mais qui fut bien une déroute française. Le duc d'Anjou, mort de tuberculose en 1584 à Château-Thierry, meurt cette fois empoisonné à la fin du roman, réalisant ainsi une prédiction de Côme Ruggieri dans La Reine Margot. Le comte Henri du Bouchage se retira bien du monde pour devenir capucin, mais ce fut de douleur à la mort de sa femme Catherine de la Valette, et non par dépit de la froideur de Diane de Méridor comme l'imagine Dumas.
About the Author: Alexandre Dumas (dit aussi Alexandre Dumas père) est un écrivain français né le 24 juillet 1802 à Villers-Cotterèts (Aisne) et mort le 5 décembre 1870 à Puys, près de Dieppe (Seine-Maritime). Il est le fils de Thomas Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie (né à Saint-Domingue, actuelle Haïti) dit le général Dumas, et le père des écrivains Henry Bauër et Alexandre Dumas (1824-1895) dit Dumas fils, auteur de La Dame aux camélias. Proche des romantiques et tourné vers le théâtre, Alexandre Dumas écrit d'abord un vaudeville à succès et des drames historiques comme Henri III et sa cour (1829), La Tour de Nesle (1832), Kean (1836). Auteur prolifique, il s'oriente ensuite vers le roman historique telles que la trilogie Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844), Vingt ans après (1845) et Le Vicomte de Bragelonne (1847), ou encore Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1844-1846) et La Reine Margot (1845). La paternité de certaines de ses oeuvres lui est contestée. Dumas fut ainsi soupçonné par plusieurs critiques de son époque d'avoir eu recours à des nègres littéraires, notamment Auguste Maquet. Toutefois les recherches contemporaines ont montré que Dumas avait mis en place une coopération avec ce dernier: Dumas s'occupait de choisir le thème général et modifiait les ébauches de Maquet pour les rendre plus dynamiques. On ne peut donc lui nier la paternité de son oeuvre, mème s'il a été aidé.
