Et cependant les facilités de communication entre les différents pays du monde augmentent chaque jour; les contrées les plus éloignées, l'Australie, le Japon, qu'autrefois nous ne faisions qu'entrevoir comme au travers d'un brouillard, sont reliées maintenant à l'Europe par des services réguliers et rapides de bateaux à vapeur: le canal de Suez nous évite même les embarras d'un transbordement; le nouveau chemin de fer du Pacifique franchit comme en se jouant ces Montagnes-Rocheuses dont le nom seul faisait frémir il y a peu d'années encore; enfin l'on voit une compagnie américaine délivrer des billets-circulaires pour un voyage de plaisir que les gens pressés peuvent accomplir en 90 jours et qui, comprenant dans son itinéraire les villes de Londres, Paris, le Caire, Bombay, Calcutta, Singapore, Hong-Kong. Shanghae, Yokohama, San Francisco. Chicago et New-York, constitue un véritable tour du monde. Il y a longtemps que les Anglais considèrent un grand voyage comme le complément in- dispensable d'une éducation soignée; au sortir de ses études, le jeune gentleman allait jusqu'à présent visiter soit l'Amérique, soit les Indes ou l'Australie; il est probable que l'on exigera prochainement le tour du monde complet, pendant que chez nous trop de fils de famille continueront à ne faire d'autre tour que celui des boulevards, entre la Madeleine et le pas sage del'Opéra."
