Die Lesegesellschaften, die mit den Freimaurer- und Illuminatenlogen zu den aufgeklarten Gesellschaften des 18. Jahrhunderts zahlten, waren die eigentlichen Bildungsinstitute der damaligen Zeit. In ihnen fand sich die aristokratisch-burgerliche Intelligenz zusammen, zugleich aber waren sie auch Plattform fur Diskussion und Rezeption des Ideenguts der Aufklarung. Der Autor analysiert anhand der Trierer, Koblenzer und auch der Mainzer Lesegesellschaft, die zu den namhaftesten im Mittelrhein-Mosel-Gebiet gehorten, Lesegesellschaften als Bewegungszentren und Kristallisationspunkte der Aufklarung in der Region. Die Lesegesellschaften werden in ihrer engen personellen Verflechtung und strukturalen Verklammerung mit Institutionen und inhaltlichen Schwerpunkten der aufgeklarten staatlichen und kirchlichen Reformen dargestellt. Die Untersuchung macht Handlungsstrategien bei der Verbreitung der Aufklarung und der Durchsetzung aufgeklarter Reformen sichtbar, wie auch beim Transfer des Gedankenguts der Aufklarung aus den Eliteschichten "nach unten". Die Lesegesellschaften entwickeln in einem sich drastisch andernden Umfeld (Franzosische Revolution) eine Eigendynamik, die zunehmend zur Ausbildung einer politischen Gegenoffentlichkeit fuhrte. Vor allem fur die Trierer Lesegesellschaft wird dieser Prozess eingehend analysiert. Das Augenmerk gilt daruber hinaus der uberregionalen Verflechtung der Lesegesellschaften in Trier, Mainz, Koblenz und Wurzburg sowie der Vernetzung insbesondere mit den Illuminatenlogen. Die Dissertation wurde 1997 mit dem Preis der Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat zu Mainz ausgezeichnet.
