About the Book

Il secondo volume sull'esercito del Regno Italico è dedicato alla cavalleria di linea e ai corpi a cavallo
della Guardia reale, come i Dragoni della Guardia, le Guardie d'Onore e la Gendarmeria Reale.
Come al solito vengono passate in rassegna regolamenti ed uniformi dei vari corpi. La seconda parte
del libro è invece dedicata alle vicende militari compiute dall'Esercito Italico negli anni dal 1805-1814.
Dopo esserci occupati delle varie campagne d'Italia nel primo volume, procediamo in questo studio
con la narrazione della famosa campagna militare di Russia del 1812. La guerra di Spagna, infine, sarà
argomento trattato nel terzo e ultimo volume della serie dedicata all'esercito del Regno Italico. Quella
in terra russa fu un'avventura militare avviata con le trombe squillanti, con gli squadroni baldanzosi
che calpestavano il sacro suolo russo, certi di andare a cogliere facili successi, ma che invece terminò
in un completo disastro che riportò a casa meno di un decimo dei soldati che erano partiti. Nella
campagna di Russia parteciparono numerosi Italiani: parecchie migliaia (piemontesi e liguri) sotto
bandiera francese perché appartenenti a paesi annessi all'Impero, dodicimila napoletani agli ordini
di Re Gioacchino Murat, ed infine ben ventisettemila sotto le insegne del Regno Italico. I Napoletani
formarono due brigate al diretto comando di generali italiani, poiché il loro Re Gioacchino era stato
posto alla testa di tutta la cavalleria della Grande Armée da Napoleone Bonaparte in persona, il quale
aveva grande fiducia nel suo cavaliere per antonomasia.
I ventisettemila Italiani del Regno Italico, materia del nostro studio, erano suddivisi fra la Guardia
Reale guidata da Teodoro Lechi, e nella 15a divisione del IV Corpo d'armata imperiale, il quale era
a sua volta posta sotto il supremo comando del Viceré d'Italia Eugenio de Beauharnais. Infine altre
due divisioni del medesimo corpo, la 13a e la 14a, avevano bandiera francese, ma erano in gran parte
formate da italiani dei paesi annessi all'Impero.
Di tutte le armi italiane presenti in Russia (ma anche in Spagna) quella di cavalleria fu quella che
maggiormente si distinse e si coprì di gloria!
