Depuis quelques annees, les neurosciences connaissent un developpement foudroyant, grace notamment a l'imagerie cerebrale. D'ou l'essor de la neuropsychologie, faisant naitre l'espoir d'une meilleure connaissance du fonctionnement de l'esprit humain et de nos capacites morales (neuroethique). Ce livre est consacre a l'examen de trois questions ethiques que cet essor a renouvelees. La premiere est celle de savoir quelle est la vraie ethique normative. L'utilitarisme et le kantisme s'affrontent depuis longtemps au plan philosophique. Des etudes recentes en neurosciences ont amene certains auteurs a soutenir que l'utilitarisme serait meilleur, en ce sens qu'il serait la conception la plus adequate pour diriger notre conduite. Mais est-ce vrai? Des etudes experimentales peuvent-elles avoir un impact aussi decisif? La seconde concerne le statut moral des etres humains qui paraissent ne pas posseder les facultes psychologiques necessaires a l'exercice de la morale. La question est ancienne, pensons a l'epineux probleme du statut moral des embryons ou des patients en etat vegetatif. Recemment, on s'est demande si les psychopathes etaient capables d'un comportement authentiquement moral. Si ce n'est pas le cas, quel impact cela aurait-il sur leur statut moral? La derniere est celle de la portee morale de certains traits de la psychologie humaine. L'etre humain ne se comporte pas toujours de maniere correcte, et il existe des situations ou il est important de le detecter. Ainsi, l'imagerie cerebrale a recemment ete proposee pour identifier les menteurs. Peut-on faire confiance a cette technologue? Et puis, si nous sommes souvent moralement deficients, ne devrait-on pas utiliser les neurosciences pour nous ameliorer moralement? Bernard Baertschi est Maitre d'enseignement et de recherche a l'Institut d'ethique biomedicale et au Departement de philosophie de l'Universite de Geneve. Il a notamment publie La valeur de la vie humaine et l'integrite de la personne (PUF, 1995), La neuroethique (La Decouverte, 2009) et La vie artificielle.
