These are the most common, frequently-occurring words in the English language that any reader will encounter-words that are recognized by sight rather than sound. Edward William Dolch, Ph.D., published a book in 1948, Problems in Reading, with a goal of wanting to fix some of the ways reading was taught at the time. Seeing that children-anyone, really-would have problems trying to memorize massive word lists, he realized some sight words were more important than others for children to learn.
Dolch came up with 220 frequently used words in the English language. It's commonly believed that 50-70% of the words you read in any general text will consist of these words. That makes these words incredibly important for kids to master-they can help make any child into a stronger reader, giving them the ability to recognize the words they see on the page, or comprehend what a sentence might be saying if they understand each of the words.
