Una famiglia italiana, una cena estiva in un ristorante americano di fronte l'immensità dell'Oceano. I camerieri anche loro immigrati, anche loro europei. Chiacchiere. Nostalgie. Margherita, 11 anni, ascolta tutto, poi pone una domanda semplice ma impegnativa, esistenziale: perché gli esseri umani si spostano, lasciano la loro terra, si trasferiscono altrove? E quando la risposta degli adulti contempla le guerre, lei sgrana gli occhi e chiede con immutata naturalezza: perché gli esseri umani fanno la guerra? La risposta viene affidata al nonno Mario, che vive in Italia e i bombardamenti li ha vissuti quando era piccolo. Lui prende la matita con la quale di solito disegna case e alberi e scrive questa lettera alla nipotina lontana, con tratto leggero ma incisivo come possono esserlo i ricordi di bambino. Ci sono la paura e la speranza e ovviamente il gioco e la scoperta del bene e del male. Il ricordo di un nonno che ha vissuto la sua infanzia durante la guerra, proprio come tanti bambini che si vedono in oggi in televisione e le cui storie sembrano quasi non appartenerci. Il racconto di un passato ormai lontano nel tempo, ma nel quale cadevano bombe distruttrici e si accumulavano macerie, c'erano soldati con mitragliatrici agli angoli della strada e ci si doveva inventare improbabili travestimenti per sfuggire alla cattura dei nemico. E' l'immagine di Napoli e dintorni fino all'arrivo degli Alleati; anni nei quali il tempo passava giocando tra ordigni inesplosi e in attesa del ritorno dei propri cari partiti per il fronte. E' la semplice, ma niente affatto banale, dimostrazione dell'indiscutibile follia della guerra, svelata dal racconto di chi quell'esperienza ha vissuto.
