About the Book

Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, épouse Sévigné, dite la marquise de Sévigné et Madame de Sévigné, née le 5 février 1626 à Paris et morte le 17 avril 1696 au château de Grignan, est une épistolière française. Origines et famille Déjà orpheline de père en 1627 à un an, son père, Celse-Bénigne de Rabutin (1596-1627), baron de Chantal, ayant été tué au siège de La Rochelle, elle perd en 1633 sa mère, Marie de Coulanges, née en 1603. Sa grand-mère Jeanne Frémyot, baronne de Chantal, veuve en 1610, a pris le voile et, sous la direction spirituelle d'un prélat Savoyard, l'évêque de Genêve François de Sales a fondé l'Ordre de la Visitation et un grand nombre de couvent tant en France que dans les pays limitrophes (Lorraine et Barrois). Elle mourut de la variole en 1641 après un entretien avec la reine Anne d'Autriche. Marie de Rabutin-Chantal vit néanmoins une jeunesse choyée et heureuse, d'abord chez son grand-père, Philippe de Coulanges, puis, après sa mort en 1636, chez le fils aîné de celui-ci, Philippe de Coulanges. Un autre oncle, l'abbé Christophe de Coulanges, dit le bien bon, sera son ami paternel et l'administrateur de ses biens. Une solide éducation, guidée en partie par l'oncle Christophe, lui vaut une connaissance parfaite de l'italien, assez bonne du latin. Le 4 août 1644 en l'église Saint-Gervais de Paris, elle épouse Henri de Sévigné (1623-1651), de vieille et bonne noblesse bretonne. Selon Roger Duchêne, les Sévigné n'ont pas de titre nobiliaire français, mais ont fini par sacrifier à l'usage en se faisant appeler barons. Henri est le premier à se faire appeler marquis. En l'épousant, Marie devient donc marquise par approximation bien plus que par usurpation . Elle devient veuve à vingt-cinq ans, le 5 février 1651, quand son époux est tué lors d'un duel contre François Amanieu, seigneur d'Ambleville, chevalier d'Albret, pour les beaux yeux de Mme de Gondran, sa maîtresse.
