L'EXECUTEUR TESTAMENTAIRE Ce roman s'insère dans la série Méandres, à la suite de La pointe de la vérité, dont quelques personnages reparaissent ici. Il devrait enthousiasmer de nombreux amateurs de généalogie. explore le secret de quelques familles, au long du XXème siècle. Il était une fois, avant la première Guerre Mondiale, trois jeunes filles, trois amies, trois Maries, dans une pension religieuse près de Limoges... Elles se vite perdues de vue, mais leurs descendances, au bout d'un siècle, se sont étrangement entrecroisées. Bernard Laville, professeur d'histoire, célibataire et près de la retraite, est chargé de l'exécution du testament d'une lointaine parente, Marie-Victoire Scharmeck, née en 1918. Il découvre le charme d'un village alsacien, et fait la connaissance de ses cohéritiers: Theresa Jones, une afro-américaine sophistiquée, qui a deux fils: l'un banquier, l'autre pianiste; Léo Stern, américain de Paris et marchand d'art, qui a une fille, Judith; Marie Laville enfin, sa propre nièce, fille de son frère Alain, décédé, qui est mariée au commissaire de police Aziz Lakhdar. Bernard épluche les papiers de famille avant de les brûler, exposant peu à peu son caractère indécis, sa timidité avec les femmes, et ses interrogations devant l'existence. En même temps, il découvre une série de personnages, un réseau de liens familiaux qui raconte la vie, au long du XXème siècle, d'une France moyenne, dont on n'a pas l'habitude d'entendre parler. Ni prolétariat ni grandes familles, paysans, bourgeois, militaires, petits aristocrates, composent un tableau réaliste, peint avec affection mais sans complaisance. Juifs et musulmans s'intègrent naturellement dans la descendance d'un général qui a connu la défaite de 1870, précisant l'image d'une France plurielle à l'opposé des idées reçues. Au passage, l'évocation des deux guerres mondiales, de l'affaire Dreyfus, de la jeunesse de Charles De Gaulle, ou du massacre d'Oradour sur Glane, rappelle que la grande Histoire n'est jamais bien loin du quotidien. Jean Pailler ne cesse de s'étonner de l'étrangeté des rencontres qui, parfois, infléchissent le cours du destin. Humaniste, il se passionne pour l'humanité des gens, célèbres ou anonymes, dont la vie s'écoule dans les méandres de l'histoire.
About the Author: Jean Pailler, né au Maroc en 1941, de parents limousins, a étudié à Sciences Po avant de changer de cap et de préparer Saint-Cyr. Officier dans l'Armée de Terre, il a servi avec enthousiasme, dans des fonctions principalement d'instruction, de formation et d'information. Il a été, entre autres, professeur de méthode et d'expression écrite aux Ecoles de Coëtquidan. Son expérience d'attaché militaire au Portugal pendant la Révolution "des oeillets" lui aura inspiré son premier livre (Portugal - Le Printemps des Capitaines - éd. L'Harmattan) et quelques autres. Il a quitté l'armée en 1990 pour se consacrer entièrement à l'écriture.
