Extrait: Chapitre 1 QUINZE AOUT - ALLEE DES VEUVES Tanneguy ne savait pas trop au juste si la vieille metayere de Chateau-le-Brec, seche et raide sous sa coiffe, etait bien son aieule. Au bourg d'Orlan, les bonnes gens l'appelaient tantot Tanneguy Le Brec, tantot le petit Monsieur. Pourquoi ce dernier nom, s'il etait le fils d'une fermiere ? Quant a cela, il ne s'etait point fait faute de questionner a tort et a travers mais les bonnes gens du bourg n'en savaient pas beaucoup plus long que lui. Douairiere Le Brec n'etait pas, d'ailleurs, une fermiere a la douzaine; elle portait des habits de paysanne en etoffe de soie. Tanneguy n'avait jamais ete vetu comme ses compagnons d'enfance. Certes, au milieu du Palais-Royal, tout plein de vainqueurs a breloques, les doigts passes dans la double fente de leurs pantalons de nankin a petit pont, les cheveux frisottes, les favoris roules, le binocle enorme au creux de l'estomac, Tanneguy ne pouvait point passer pour un mirliflor; mais il avait un pantalon flottant de toile ecrue sur sa guetre pareille et bien lacee; une jaquette de velours nantais dessinait sa taille gracieuse et deja robuste; un ruban de laine reunissait, en facon de cravate, les revers rabattus de sa chemise blanche, brodee d'un fin lisere bleu. Pour coiffure, il avait un large chapeau de paille pose de cote sur les grosses boucles de ses cheveux. Et je vous affirme que ce costume-la, porte par Tanneguy, valait bien la toilette des nigauds a breloques. Le plus grand miroir de Chateau-le-Brec n'avait guere plus d'un demi-pied carre. Tanneguy s'arreta devant une des glaces qui decoraient la devanture du cafe de Valois et fut tout aise de se voir comme cela du haut en bas. Il se trouva de bonne taille, bien pris sur ses hanches, et un petit mouvement d'orgueil lui redressa la tete, quand, pour la premiere fois, il s'appliqua les paroles souvent saisies a la volee - Quel beau garcon ! Paul Feval est un ecrivain francais, ne le 29 septembre 1816 a Rennes et mort le 7 mars 1887 a Paris 7e. Son oeuvre, composee de plus de 200 volumes dont de nombreux romans populaires edites en feuilleton, eut un succes considerable de son vivant, egalant celle d'Honore de Balzac et d'Alexandre Dumas.
