About the Book

Engineman Steve Lutz is a Florida boy in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He's hell bent on making the most of his time on liberty call and developing relationships with the Vietnamese-a teenage cyclo driver, a black market operator, an opium-addicted seller of smugglers' gold, and a sizzling romance with a beautiful bargirl-while trying to outsmart other sailors who want to get their hands on the high quality gold. The war occasionally intrudes, but Lutz's dealings on the black market allow him to stay in a hotel in Saigon during liberty call, smoke his OJs (opiated marijuana joints) and become entranced by the beautiful and wise Mylee, who helps him deal with his feelings about the refugees that crowd the streets of Saigon as the war draws to a close. He and his buddy Nelson's quest for smugglers' gold brings them into perilous situations with the dark underbelly of both the Navy and Vietnam. Aboard ship, he engages in hijinks while scrupulously performing his job in the engine room. It's an incredible tour of duty, and a humorous and heartfelt look into the multi-dimensional aspects of a country at war.
About the Author: Richmond (Rick) Pratt was born in Rhode Island and moved to Florida at the age of five. He graduated from Palm Beach Junior College and did the hippie hitchhiking thing around the country before going into Navy engineman school, where he learned how to work on diesel engines. He was in Vietnam for ten months until October 1971, stationed on a YW (Yard Water) boat (clean water was as important as ammunition for the war). And yes, he did indeed enjoy liberty call in Saigon. Returning stateside, Rick worked on engines at a large air-conditioning plant, then became a carpenter and a metal-plater. During lunch time at work, he'd write down the stories he could remember from Vietnam, leading to Liberty Call. Rick is an accomplished potter and also spins a good tale.
