Nach der Veröffentlichung seines ersten Romans und angesichts der dadurch ausgelösten Resonanz setzte der Autor die Geschichte mit Das Lied der Schwalbe fort, einem Werk, das zwar einen Teil des vorangegangenen Romans aufgreift, aber ein eigenes Gepräge hat.

Die Geschichte spielt in einer Zeit der Revolutionen, Revolten und internationalen Kämpfe. Und inmitten dieses Szenarios, in einem von extremer politischer Gewalt erschütterten Argentinien der 1950er Jahre, versucht eine Frau, nicht nur in einer von Schmerz und Angst geprägten Realität eines immer komplexeren Landes zu überleben, sondern auch unter der Last und Monotonie einer unglücklichen Ehe und eines leeren, ziellosen Lebens.

Die einzig mögliche Lösung besteht darin, sich auf die Suche nach "seiner Bestimmung" zu begeben, und er wird sie in einer Revolution finden, die ihm zwar nicht gehört, ihm aber den Sinn gibt, nach dem er sich sehnt.

Genau dieser Weg führt sie durch die Saat der kubanischen Revolution an der Seite von "Che" und Fidel Castro.

Historischer Kontext

Eine Gruppe junger Revolutionäre, die sich "Generation der Hundertjährigen" nannte und von Fidel Castro angeführt wurde, war entschlossen, Fulgencio Batista (De-facto-Diktator zwischen 1952 und 1959 in Kuba) zu stürzen. 1953 versuchte sie, die Moncada-Kaserne und die Carlos Manuel de Céspedes-Kaserne zu besetzen, scheiterte jedoch. Batista gelang es, diesen Aufstand zu unterbinden, sie vor Gericht zu stellen und ins Gefängnis zu stecken. Nachdem sie fast zwei Jahre lang ihrer Freiheit beraubt worden waren, wurden Fidel Castro und seine Genossen im Rahmen einer Amnestie freigelassen. Bald darauf gründeten sie die M-26-7, eine Bewegung zum Sturz des Diktators. Sie reisten nach Mexiko, um sich neu zu organisieren und Kontakte zu Verbündeten zu knüpfen, die mit der Sache sympathisierten. 1956 stachen sie zusammen mit einer Gruppe von Guerilleros, darunter Ernesto Guevara, mit der Granma in See und liefen in den Mangroven von Playa Las Coloradas, Kuba, auf Grund. Desorientiert und zerstreut konnten sie ihre Pläne nicht sofort umsetzen und mussten in der Sierra Maestra Zuflucht suchen. Dort wird Das Lied der Schwalbe seinen Höhepunkt und einen völlig unerwarteten Ausgang erreichen.
