This volume contains the papers presented at IALCCE2018, the Sixth International Symposium on Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE2018), held in Ghent, Belgium, October 28-31, 2018. It consists of a book of extended abstracts and a USB device with full papers including the Fazlur R. Khan lecture, 8 keynote lectures, and 390 technical papers from all over the world.
Contributions relate to design, inspection, assessment, maintenance or optimization in the framework of life-cycle analysis of civil engineering structures and infrastructure systems. Life-cycle aspects that are developed and discussed range from structural safety and durability to sustainability, serviceability, robustness and resilience. Applications relate to buildings, bridges and viaducts, highways and runways, tunnels and underground structures, off-shore and marine structures, dams and hydraulic structures, prefabricated design, infrastructure systems, etc. During the IALCCE2018 conference a particular focus is put on the cross-fertilization between different sub-areas of expertise and the development of an overall vision for life-cycle analysis in civil engineering.
The aim of the editors is to provide a valuable source of cutting edge information for anyone interested in life-cycle analysis and assessment in civil engineering, including researchers, practising engineers, consultants, contractors, decision makers and representatives from local authorities.
About the Author: Robby Caspeele obtained his Ph. D. degree in Civil Engineering from Ghent University in 2010. He was appointed professor in the field of Structural Reliability at Ghent University, Department of Structural Engineering. His main areas of expertise relate to full-probabilistic and semi-probabilistic structural reliability analysis and risk management of structures, structural robustness, analysis of concrete and steel structures, assessment of existing structures, production and conformity control, numerical simulation techniques and large-scale testing. He is Laureate of the Award Gustave Magnel edition 2010-2014. He is a member of several national and international standardization committees and working groups related to structural engineering, among which related to fib, CEN and JCSS.
Luc Taerwe is a Senior Full professor in Structural Concrete at Ghent University (Ghent, Belgium). Since 1977 he has conducted research and teaching in the areas of reinforced and prestressed concrete, fire resistance, robustness of structures, tunnel linings, composite reinforcement (FRP), structural reliability, statistical quality control, high performance and fibre reinforced concrete etc. He is Pro Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, former Director of the Magnel Lab for Concrete Research and former Head of the Department of Structural Engineering of Ghent University. Moreover, he is a member of the Royal Belgian Academy of Technical Sciences, a National RPGE Chair Professor at Tongji University (Shanghai) and President of ie-net Society of Engineers. Since 2006 he serves as Editor-in-chief of the fib journal Structural Concrete. He received awards from RILEM, IABSE, fib, ACI and IIFC.
Dan Frangopol is the inaugural holder of the Fazlur R. Khan Endowed Chair of Structural Engineering and Architecture at Lehigh University. Before joining Lehigh University in 2006, he was Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he is now Professor Emeritus. He is recognized as a leader in the field of life-cycle engineering of civil and marine structures. He is the Founding President of the International Associations for Bridge Maintenance and Safety (IABMAS) and Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE). He is the Founding Editor of Structure and Infrastructure Engineering. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards from ASCE, IABSE, IASSAR, and other professional organizations. He holds 4 honorary doctorates and 12 honorary professorships from major universities.
