Recent years have heralded a period of unprecedented changes in the Indian Financial sector. Following the Reforms in the Banking sector and Stock market, reforms in the Insurance sector was introduced in 1999, which was a part of the overall financial sector reform. Insurance is very important for any Economy and it is especially important for Country like India as it works as an important vehicle of savings for the economy for longer period of time. The low Level of insurance penetration, Higher premiums, less attractive products along with the monopolistic approach of the state life insurer has been highlighted in the Malhotra Committee report and the opening up of the insurance sector has been advocated.

After the introduction of the new economic policy, the Indian economy has witnessed a radical Transformation in its structure. The implementations of new economic Policy have improved the GDP for the last few years consecutively in and around 8%. This has improved the per capita Income of the country. Rural India has also improved its earning from Agricultural and non-agricultural incomes. On the other hand, rural people migrated into the Urban areas for better Job and earnings. The average Indians are Young and the rising of middle class peoples in India are acting as a catalyst in the post reform development in India. Under these circumstances this book also tried to find out the determinants of Demand for Life Insurance in India in the post reform era.

The present Study is expected to provide a brief overview on the overall impact of these reforms Measures on the life insurance sector and answer the questions regarding the viability of the life insurance sector reforms in India and assess the present Indian life market. The findings and the suggestions of this study will be useful for the policy makers, leaders, potential insurers, researchers, academicians along with the General readers who are interested in the Indian life insurance sector.

About the Author
Dr. Debabrata Mitra presently serving as a Reader in the Post Graduate Department of Commerce, University of North Bengal, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. He has been acting as Head, Department of Management, University of North Bengal since September 2008. Dr. Mitra obtained his M.Com. degree from the University of North Bengal and stood second in the 1st class. He was awarded with the University Silver Medal for his excellence at Masters Level. Previously he was awarded National Scholarship for his excellent performance in B.Com. Honours Examination, 1986. He has obtained a Post Graduate Teaching experience of more than fourteen years. Previously he served as a lecturer in Business Organization and Management at Darjeeling Government College, under the WBES for a period of three years. His areas of specialization are Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, Organizational Behaviour and Insurance Sector. His present area of Research is mainly concentrated in Industrial Relations in Indian Tea Industry, various aspects of Indian Insurance in the liberalized regime. He has contributed twenty research papers in various National and International Journals. He has contributed research papers in more than fifteen National and International Conferences, Workshops and Seminars. He has been invited to deliver Lectures as a resource person by different Universities in India. He has acted as examiner of PhD. theses sent by the different Universities. He was the Executive Committee member of Indian Commerce Association. He was granted Major Research Project by the University Grants Commission. Currently, Eight Registered Ph.D. Scholars are pursuing research work under his direct supervision. He was awarded "Fellow" of Indian Commerce Association for his outstanding Contribution in the field of Commerce and Management at its Visakhapatnam Conference held in December 2006. Dr. Mitra is the elected member of North Bengal University Executive Council, Faculty Council for Post Graduate Studies in Arts, Commerce and Law, BBA Expert Committee, Under-Graduate Board of Studies in Commerce etc.

Mr. Amlan Ghosh obtained his M.Com. degree from North Bengal University in the year of 1998 and obtained first class. He graduated with honours in Accountancy in the year of 1996 and also obtained first class. He obtained his Ph D degree in commerce in the year of 2010. He has already contributed research articles in different National and International Journals. He has presented papers in various National and International seminars.
