Brusquement, en moins de dix ans, entre 1290 et 1300, la devotion a la Vierge Marie a pris un tour nouveau en Occident. On connait le role de Duns Scot dans la formulation d'un dogme nouveau, celui de l'Immaculee Conception de Marie, vers 1298, preparee, selon l'auteur, des 1292, chez Henri de Gand. Le present livre insere entre ces deux moments celui d'une evocation du miracle de Notre-Dame de Lorette, du transport surnaturel de la maison de la Vierge de Palestine en Occident, que l'on trouverait dans les Quodlibeta du franciscain Richard de Mediavilla. Ce dernier aurait raisonne sur ce miracle marial, date des annees 1290 par les premiers recits de la fin du XVe siecle. Cette allusion impliquait de rajeunir de dix ans le recueil quodlibetique qui evoquait indirectement le miracle. L'enquete qui aboutit a ce resultat saisit du meme coup les positions originales de Mediavilla en matiere de fiscalite, de physique, d'anthropologie, de liturgie et d'education princiere dans un grand debat franciscain. La rectification des dates d'activite de Mediavilla modifie la portee de son oeuvre: il devient l'un des pionniers du grand tournant de la pensee qui apparait chez Duns Scot et chez Ockham. Cette rectification correspond de pres a un contenu nouveau. Bien des concepts de Duns Scot s'eclairent par la lecture des tentatives tatonnantes de Richard. A cote d'un aspect pre-scotiste, le texte offre des jalons originaux en direction du nominalisme et d'un certain materialisme. Un des benefices d'une meilleure connaissance des textes de Mediavilla serait de combler un vide de l'histoire de la pensee et de rompre avec l'image intimidante de certains penseurs, isoles dans leur decouverte soudaine. Alain Boureau, directeur d'etudes a l'EHESS, est medieviste. Parmi ses derniers ouvrages aux Belles Lettres: La Religion de l'Etat.
