Dafür wird zunächst das Liquiditätsmodell für Banken von Diamond und Dybvig vorgestellt, was die hauptsächliche Eigenleistung darstellt. Das grundsätzliche Vorgehen versucht zwischen der theoretischen Fundierung mit dem Modell und dessen Erweiterungen zur überprüfbaren Realität eine Brücke zu schlagen. In der Arbeit werden im zweiten Kapitel zunächst Grundbegriffe, die zum weiteren Verständnis dienlich sind, erläutert. Darauffolgend schafft das dritte Kapitel die theoretische Fundierung mittels des Modells von Diamond und Dybvig aus der Banktheorie, in der sich die Liquidität wiederfindet. Zusätzlich werden Modellerweiterungen vorgestellt, die für die Forschungsfrage dieser Arbeit wichtig sind. Anschließend werden im vierten Kapitel mehrere empirische Untersuchungen zu diesem Thema vorgestellt, um die Forschungsfrage beantworten zu können. Abschließend fasst das fünfte Kapitel die Arbeit zusammen und präsentiert die Ergebnisse. Die Finanzkrise von 2007 wird mit der Immobilienblase in den USA und den Kreditverbriefungen des Subprime Sektors in Verbindung gebracht. Allerdings war aber auch die nicht adäquate Beachtung des Liquiditätsrisikos ein Grund für diese Krise. Vor allem wird die Finanzkrise an vielen Stellen mitunter auch als Liquiditätskrise bezeichnet. Berichte der Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) und des Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) in den USA gaben als einen der Gründe für die Ausfälle der Banken während der weltweiten Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise sowohl das Liquiditätsrisiko als auch das Kreditrisiko im Zusammenspiel an.
