About the Book

What makes one boy 'confident' and the other 'sensitive'? It can't be as simple as one having a thicker skin than the other, can it?
Max is a forty-something-year-old musician, singer, and fan of Kate Bush and the Eurovision Song Contest. Two weeks ago, he resigned from his job because of issues with his mental wellbeing. It's not the first time in his life he's had to do this - it's happened loads of times before, but today is the first time he's found himself needing to sit in front of a psychiatrist.

In this memoir, Max turns back the clock to see if he can discover what, if anything, has contributed to his newly diagnosed personality disorder.

Maybe it's because he's too sensitive. Maybe it's because he was bullied at school. Or maybe it's just because he's gay.

"All I really knew was that it wasn't a good idea to be gay..."

You'll read about Max's experiences of growing up in Plymouth (UK) during the 1970s and 1980s, and of unexpectedly finding himself and his family being rapidly transported out of the country by the Royal Navy - it would be years before he'd find out the real reason why. Within a couple of years, he would return to the UK where he recounts his final years at primary school and tells us the harrowing tale of a truly unpleasant encounter with a monstrously wicked and predatory headmaster.

"I was calm. I didn't cry. I wondered if this was what King Charles the First felt like before his head was chopped off."

He goes on to talk about the bullying he experienced at secondary school during a time when Section 28 did nothing but help fuel the fear of homosexuality that so evidently existed in the classroom.

"There were times that I did think I should at least try to behave like 'one of the boys'..."

Max talks of the difficulties in coming out during the 1990s and the steps he took in order to try and conform to the expectations of society, including his hilarious attempts to find himself a girlfriend.

"I don't think it was the type of ride she was hoping for..."

We discover how Max has spent his life battling with anxiety and the impact it has had on his life choices and dreams of becoming a professional singer, including the outcome of his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a world-renowned performing arts academy in central London.

"...I remember making, as an adult, an absolutely resolute decision to run and hide, to simply abandon altogether whatever it was that was causing the anxiety..."

Throughout the book, Max shares his own experience of life including how he came to develop a passion for musical theatre, how he twice survived a rare type of cancer called Sarcoma, and how his life was affected by a frightening addiction. He even gives us his advice on how to keep airline flight attendants happy.

Sometimes Max thinks he took the wrong turn. Could he have made some wiser decisions throughout his life, or should he, like Edith, sing of having no regrets and learn to be 'a little more Piaf'?
