About the Book

"Did you ever know of anyone running 'shine?" I asked. Gene Humphreys laughed and said, "Used to, a lot of them did. They'd build 'em a whiskey still, they called it, out in the woods, as far back in the dark places as they could get it. They'd make their brew and everything and they'd cook it off. There was one fella that lived down the road here...... "SHOT LIKE A DOG. Perry County Comes to the Front with a Characteristic Case." Opal Shepherd handed me the newspaper article about her great grandfather shooting his brother. I told Perk Dickson I had heard that he had once retrieved some men out of a well. Dead men. He rubbed the white stubble on his chin as he recalled the incident, his voice softer. Here I was in a tree with a bear at my feet and Danny was a good ways off. I wasn't even sure if he was within earshot. As I tried to come up with a plan if the bear started an ascent... Charlie May Simon is among the state's most prolific major authors. Known primarily for her children's literature, with just under thirty books and with numerous short stories to her credit, Ms. Simon once lived at Hollis, Arkansas... With the sun going down, I took off back along the riverside trail, retracing my steps and watching for my flags. I found the spot where I came in from the woods, and started the climb. I followed the yellow flags, but as the daylight faded, they became a little harder to see... Audrey Breshears and her husband, Danny, acquired their goat farm at Hollis in 1999. She has stories to tell as do the colorful people she interviewed for Living at Hollis, which was inspired by a desire to record the history of the community in the words of its residents. Their stories, interspersed with Breshears', immerse the reader in a historically and culturally rich part of Arkansas.
About the Author: Audrey Breshears started her writing career mid-life. She is a registered nurse, a licensed contractor, a ham radio operator and amateur photographer. Breshears and husband Danny spend a good deal of time at their cabin in the Ouachita Mountains of Central Arkansas.
