About the Book

Livsens Ondskab (udgivet 1899) er Gustav Wieds bedst kendte og vel nok mest elskede værk. Det er beretningen om livets gang I Gammelkøbing, en fiktiv Sjællandsk købstad. Hovedpersonerne som Toldkontrollør Knagsted, Thummelumsen, Mo'r Karen, Menneske-Mortensen, Overlærer Clausen og Konsul Mørch er blevet klassikere I dansk litteratur. Emanuel Thomsen (Thummelumsen) er besat af ønsket om at købe sin fædrene Møllegård tilbage, efter at han og mor Karen har været nødt til at fraflytte den. Han spinker og sparer, spiller på lotterisedler og tager ekstraarbejde for at samle midler til at få opfyldt sin drøm. Han vinder i lotteriet, men trods den store gevinst bliver intet, som han ønsker det. Han serverer for Ædedolkenes klub, byens honoratiores, der mødes fire gange om året på byens hotel (Prindsen) for at indtage et overdådigt måltid. Toldkontrollør Knagsted er den kyniske satiriker, mens hans modstykke og ven overlærer Clausen er lalleglad idealist. Wied skildrer sine figurer med megen varme og stor humor og det er denne personskildring, der har gjort værket populært i brede kredse siden det først udkom.
About the Author: Gustaw Wied (1858-1914) var en dansk forfatter og samfundsrevser. Søn af Carl August Wied og Catha Wied og den femte i en børneflok på elleve. Wied udgav i 1889 sin første bog En hjemkomst, et sørgespil. Det næste En Bryllupsnat fra 1892, handler om en bedstemor, som vil dræbe sit barnebarn. Det blev mødt med så stor uvilje, at det blev udpebet ved premieren. Barnlige Sjæle fra 1893 karakteriseredes som en samling yderst vovede fortællinger. Han var kendt som en samfundsrevser og benyttede enhver lejlighed til at spidde borgerskabet. Han var flittig bidragyder til bladet København, som blev redigeret af Ove Rode. En novelle han fik trykt i dette førte i 1892 til at han ved Højesteret blev idømt 14 dages fængsel for utilstedelige udtryk. Det drejede sig om fortællingen De unge og de gamle (fortællingen blev senere let redigeret optrykt i samlingerne Barnlige Sjæle og Fra Land og By (1907)). Wied har skildret sit fængselsophold, som foregik på Tugt- og Børnehuset på Christianshavn, i romanen Ungdomshistorier (1895), hvor forfatteren Gunnar Warberg skal forestille Wied selv. Hans satire og kyniske humor kom tydeligt til udtryk i romanerne Livsens Ondskab (1899), Slægten (1898), Knagsted (1902) og Pastor Sørensen og Co. (1913).
