About the Book

This book contains poems, songs and dialogues, which have been used in the nursery as teaching materials for the various celebrations of the school year. The material is based on manuscripts of Elissavet Apostolidou collected during her thirty-three years of professional career from various sources. The primary purpose of this book is to collect the material and to make it available to nursery teachers as an aid for the needs of teaching today. The second and equally important purpose is to give an overview of the work of the nursery teacher in the 1950s.
About the Author: Elissavet (Liza) Apostolidou was born in 1934 in Agios Christoforos, Province of Kozani, Greece. Liza is the third child of the family and the first to go to university. She graduated the Pedagogical Academy of Thessaloniki in 1957 and started to work as a nursery teacher in January 1958 in Mesovouno, Province of Kozani. In 1968, she moved to Ptolemais and in 1979 she moved to Thessaloniki. She retired in December 1990 after 33 years of service. The first nursery where she worked in 1958 had sixty children aged five and six years old. The children had to sit on the floor due to lack of desks and had to bring from home all the necessary materials because there was no financial support from the state. Liza managed to equip the nursery with all the necessary and started her own collection of teaching materials to support the nursery curriculum. Over the years, the teaching materials multiplied and matured. During the academic year 1979-80, she participated in a training program at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and offered her experience and knowledge to educate students at the Pedagogical Academy of Thessaloniki. This involvement continued until her retirement, offering internships to students who attended the educational program in her classroom. In May 1962, she married to Ioannis Theodoulidis and had three children: Charalampos (1963), Maria (1968) and Theodoros (1974).
