Los titanes venideros es el testamento intelectual de Ernst Junger, escritor, soldado en las dos grandes guerras, viajero, psiconauta, hombre de ciencia y uno de los pensadores mas lucidos y polemicos de nuestro tiempo. El volumen recoge la serie de entrevistas realizadas por el periodista Antonio Gnoli y el filosofo Franco Volpi en 1995, tres anos antes de la muerte de Junger, en las que el autor no solo analiza los episodios fundamentales del siglo XX (la Belle Epoque, las dos guerras mundiales...) y retrata a las figuras que han marcado la cultura y el pensamiento (Picasso, Gide, Celine, Yourcenar, Heidegger...), sino que tambien arroja luz sobre nuestro presente, «un momento de transicion nebuloso» dominado por la tecnica y el nihilismo que la acompana, en el que «las fronteras ya no tienen validez». [...] Una voz inigualablemente libre que entronca con la gran tradicion espiritual de Occidente y Oriente.» Antonio Escohotado junger_ernstErnst Junger (Heidelberg, 1895-Wilflingen, 1998), cultivador de la cronica, el ensayo y la novela, soldado en las dos grandes guerras, viajero, psiconauta y hombre de ciencia volcado hacia el estudio de la naturaleza, es una de las figuras mas lucidas y polemicas del siglo XX. Tras pasar su infancia en Hannover, huye del hogar familiar en 1913 y se alista en la Legion Extranjera francesa. Voluntario en la Primera Guerra Mundial, narra su experiencia en Tempestades de acero (1920), obra que obtiene un exito inmediato y le vale la fama. En 1923 comienza sus estudios de Ciencias Naturales, y a finales de la decada se traslada a Berlin, donde colabora en publicaciones del movimiento revolucionario conservador. Aunque su produccion escrita, en especial obras como La movilizacion total (1930) y El trabajador (1932), suscita el interes de los nacionalsocialistas, Junger rechaza varias veces la oferta para ocupar un cargo parlamentario y les prohibe usar su obra con fines propagandisticos. Publica Sobre los acantilados de marmol (1939), su respuesta al totalitarismo, y al estallar la Segunda Guerra Mundial es destinado al mando aleman en Paris, donde conoce a diversas personalidades de la cultura. La publicacion de Jardines y carreteras (1942) le vale la censura por parte del regimen y, tras el atentado contra Hitler en 1944, el mando aleman de Paris, involucrado en los hechos, es disuelto y Junger es licenciado del ejercito. Para entonces ya ha comenzado a circular de forma clandestina La paz, que se publicara en 1946 fuera de Alemania, ya que inicialmente tambien el gobierno militar britanico de la zona ocupada prohibe que el autor publique. En la decada de los 50 se traslada a Wilflingen, en la Alta Suabia, donde vivira retirado hasta el final de sus dias, compaginando la entomologia y los viajes por Europa, Asia y Africa con su actividad como escritor, en la que destacan sus diarios.
