Lucien est ne vers 120 apres J.-C., a Samosate, aux confins de l'Empire romain, alors a l'apogee de sa puissance. Tres vite, il abandonne sa langue natale, sans doute l'arameen, pour embrasser la culture grecque. Devenu un brillant orateur, il voyage dans le Bassin mediterraneen, ou son eloquence mordante lui vaut fortune et gloire. Malgre les siecles qui nous separent de lui, son scepticisme desabuse, son refus des fanatismes, de la superstition, des faux prophetes, des cultes irrationnels, des maitres a penser qui manipulent la jeunesse, sont d'une actualite brulante. Le regard qu'il porte sur la societe est tres noir: il voit avec degout triompher convoitise, cruaute, servilite, vulgarite... Satiriste dans l'ame, il stigmatise l'hypocrisie sous toutes ses formes. Son humour est devastateur, qu'il caricature coquettes, pedants, gloutons, debauches, ou misanthropes. Le rire, cruel ou bon enfant, est toujours present, notamment quand il revisite la mythologie traditionnelle et campe des dieux bougons, coleriques, jaloux... Ses voyages fantaisistes sur la lune, au fond des Enfers ou dans le ventre d'une baleine, temoignent d'une imagination sans limite et sont d'une drolerie irresistible. Cette oeuvre si riche, qui joue de maniere irreverencieuse avec les modeles herites de la Grece classique, a inspire les grands humanistes (Thomas More, Erasme, Rabelais, Cyrano de Bergerac, Fenelon, Fontenelle, Swift) et meme certains peintres de la Renaissance. Comme Plutarque, mais a sa maniere ironique, Lucien a ete un des relais principaux entre l'Antiquite greco-latine et nous. Cette traduction integrale (a l'exception de quelques textes apocryphes, rejetes par la majorite des critiques), est la premiere en France depuis celle d'Emile Chambry, qui date de 1933-1934.
About the Author: Lucien de Samosate (125-192) est l'un des plus brillants esprits de l'Antiquite tardive. Ne en Syrie, Lucien apprit le grec et fit des etudes d'eloquence et de philosophie. Il voyagea beaucoup, en Asie Mineure, en Italie, en Grece et en Gaule, mais c'est en Egypte qu'il s'installa, apres avoir obtenu un poste dans l'administration romaine. Il fut un ecrivain prolifique et pratiqua tous les genres, le plus souvent pour les parodier. Dote d'une plume aussi alerte qu'erudite, Lucien se moqua de l'esprit de son temps, de ses croyances et de ses superstitions. Anne-Marie Ozanam est professeur de latin et de grec en premiere superieure (khagne). Elle a publie aux Belles Lettres, outre cinq recueils consacres a Lucien, des traductions de Cesar, Tacite et Alciphron, et aux editions Gallimard, la traduction integrale des Vies paralleles de Plutarque. Anne-Marie Ozanam est professeur de latin et de grec en premiere superieure (khagne). Elle a publie aux Belles Lettres, outre cinq recueils consacres a Lucien, des traductions de Cesar, Tacite et Alciphron, et aux editions Gallimard, la traduction integrale des Vies paralleles de Plutarque.
