Uno studio obiettivo della conduzione della guerra da parte di Cadorna porta alla smentita di tanti luoghi comuni spacciati per verità storiche: si scoprirà che l'esercito italiano, unico esercito alleato costantemente all'offensiva dall'inizio della guerra, fu quello che fece le maggiori conquiste territoriali, che le perdite italiane furono inferiori a quelle francesi ed inglesi, che le fucilazioni e gli atti d'indisciplina nell'esercito italiano furono molti meno di quelli avvenuti in Francia, che gli italiani nel 1917 avevano superato tecnicamente l'avversario, cui erano inferiori nel 1915, che Cadorna fu l'unico generale alleato a ragionare in termini di guerra di coalizione e non di guerra parallela. Sotto Cadorna l'esercito italiano inquadrò circa tre milioni di uomini, quanti mai né prima né dopo, e combatté le più grandi e sanguinose battaglie della propria storia arrivando ad essere una macchina militare mastodontica, lenta e possente, capace di rialzarsi senza l'aiuto alleato e vincere una guerra, dopo aver subito una catastrofica disfatta. Viene analizzata approfonditamente la battaglia di Caporetto ed la ritirata al Piave, e sono integralmente riportati gli ordini del 18 settembre e del 10 ottobre 1917 dati ai Comandanti d'Armata alla vigilia di Caporetto, che smentiscono definitivamente la leggenda di un Cadorna sorpreso dagli avvenimenti e incredulo circa l'offensiva nemica: ordini che, se eseguiti, avrebbero cambiato le sorti della battaglia; è poi riportato anche lo studio fatto preparare da Cadorna già nel giugno 1917 sul'eventuale ripiegamento al Piave, che il Generalissimo applicò dopo Caporetto, salvando l'esercito e vincendo la battaglia d'arresto. Anche la figura dello spietato macellaio, del fautore di una disciplina crudele ed ottusa tanto cara alla storiografia progressista viene ridimensionata sulla base della corrispondenza con il governo, riportata in appendice. In questo lavoro la figura di Cadorna è vista come appare dai documenti d'archivio, dalla corrispondenza privata, dai giudizi di amici ed avversari, per restituirne un ritratto imparziale basato su una documentazione spesso inedita, che cerca di ristabilire la verità al di là di apologie e denigrazioni.
