"Lukas - Eine deutsche Erzählung" war der erste Teil einer deutschen Geschichte der Nachkriegszeit, geschrieben entlang der Biographie eines 1943 Geborenen. Die Erzählung endet 1962. Im vorliegenden Band erlebt der Leser das Land aus der Perspektive der Titelfigur im Jahrzehnt nach dem Bau der Berliner Mauer. Als Sechzehnjähriger hatte Lukas Bekanntschaft mit dem politischen Strafrecht der DDR gemacht. Nach anderthalb Jahren Haft sucht er jetzt einen Weg, doch noch zum Abitur zu kommen und zu studieren. Mehr als drei Jahre ist er als Hilfsarbeiter tätig. Blut, Gedärm und Fäulnis prägen seine Arbeitswelt in einem Anatomischen Institut. Parallel darf er die Abendoberschule besuchen. Er wird zum Studium der Tiermedizin zugelassen, fühlt sich jedoch im gesellschaftlichen System der DDR weiterhin fremd, denkt immer wieder über Möglichkeiten zur Flucht nach. Die politische Entwicklung in Deutschland und der Welt verfolgt er aufmerksam. Die Kuba-Krise, die "Spiegel"-Affäre, der Vietnam-Krieg, der Mord an den Kennedy-Brüdern, der "Prager Frühling", die Ostverträge der Bundesregierung sind die großen Themen des Jahrzehnts, die zur Parteinahme auffordern. In der Auseinandersetzung der Systeme steht er auf der Seite des Westens. Personenkult um Ulbricht, Selbstherrlichkeit des Politbüros, Unterdrückung jeglicher Kritik, blindes kulturpolitisches Wüten nähren Lukas' Ablehnung des Systems immer aufs Neue. Der Selbstmord des Vorsitzenden der Staatlichen Plankommission, das Berufsverbot für Professor Robert Havemann, das Verbot einer ganzen Jahresproduktion von DEFA-Filmen durch das 11. Plenum, das Auftrittsverbot für Wolf Biermann, die Sprengung der Leipziger Universitätskirche stehen für die selbstmörderische Borniertheit der DDR-Führung. Und dennoch gibt es für Lukas privat das richtige Leben im falschen. Verbotene Bücher, Theater, Westfernsehen, gleichgesinnte Freunde, ausgelassenes Studentenleben und die Liebe bestimmen seinen Alltag viel mehr als der politische Druck. Der
