Quand on a affaire à une doctrine encore en voie de développement, au lieu de rechercher les déviations et les obscurités inévitables, ne vaut-il pas mieux s'attacher à saisir plutôt les côtés vrais et solides ? A ce point de vue, la paléontologie offre un secours précieux. En réalité, c'est dans la paléontologie surtout que la croyance à l'évolution a sa raison d'être. Sans la certitude que nous avons de l'antiquité de la vie organique sur le globe, cette croyance ne serait qu'un jeu d'esprit; avec cette assurance, elle devient une hypothèse qui s'adapte mieux que toute autre aux faits observés. En dehors de l'évolution, les phénomènes anciens ne constituent qu'une énigme indéchiffrable. Si les espèces ne sont pas sorties les unes des autres par voie de filiation, elles ont dû se montrer subitement par l'effet d'une série d'opérations mystérieuses dont il est impossible de fournir les preuves. Faire intervenir l'action directe d'une volonté supérieure, c'est introduire gratuitement l'inconnu dans le domaine de la science. Sans doute, pour défendre l'autre solution, on est aussi obligé de faire appel à l'inconnu; on a du moins une base solide, l'exemple des métamorphoses qui sous nos yeux transforment les individus et quelquefois influent sur plusieurs générations. L'évolution est un phénomène du même ordre; seulement elle a eu une période de temps presque indéfinie pour se dérouler. Inconnu pour inconnu, celui qu'entraîne l'idée de l'évolution paraît plus vraisemblable que l'autre, si toutefois l'on consent à se dépouiller de tout parti-pris en faveur de l'ancien système, pour qui une longue possession semble un excellent titre. C'est dans cet esprit que nous aborderons l'étude des principales questions que l'école transformiste a tenté dernièrement de résoudre..."
