L'Île des Pingouins d'Anatole France est une satire mordante de l'histoire de France, déguisée en chronique fictive d'une civilisation pingouin. L'ouvrage s'ouvre sur un épisode cocasse: le moine Maël, égaré en mer, baptise par erreur une colonie de pingouins, les prenant pour des hommes. Dieu, confronté à ce dilemme théologique, décide de transformer les pingouins en êtres humains. France déroule ensuite l'histoire de cette nouvelle nation, calquée sur celle de la France, depuis ses origines mythiques jusqu'à l'époque contemporaine de l'auteur. Chaque période historique est revisitée avec un humour caustique et une ironie cinglante. L'auteur passe au crible les grands mythes nationaux, les institutions religieuses et politiques, ainsi que les moeurs de la société. Les épisodes se succèdent, parodiant les moments clés de l'histoire française: l'établissement de la propriété privée, l'avènement de la monarchie, les croisades, la Renaissance, la Révolution, et l'ère industrielle. France n'épargne aucun aspect de la société, critiquant aussi bien le clergé que la noblesse, la bourgeoisie que le prolétariat. À travers cette fresque satirique, l'auteur dénonce les travers de l'humanité la cupidité, l'hypocrisie, la violence, et la bêtise. Il remet en question les récits historiques officiels et les idéologies dominantes, invitant le lecteur à porter un regard critique sur sa propre société. L'oeuvre se conclut sur une vision dystopique du futur, où la civilisation pingouin, devenue une métropole moderne, s'effondre sous le poids de ses contradictions. Cette fin pessimiste reflète les inquiétudes de France face aux dérives de la société industrielle et à la montée des nationalismes.
