Ce livre est un recueil de documents constitué à partir de tous les souvenirs que l'on peut conserver d'une personne emportée subitement par la guerre, comme les photos, les lettres ou cartes, les documents de la jeunesse et de la vie, les objets de captivité, ou les discussions que l'on a pu avoir avec ceux qu'ils l'ont connu. Ainsi, Jean, fils de Germaine et de Robert, mari de Giselle, père de Claudette, est aussi mon grand-père, mort pour la France en 1944. Il est, avec Giselle et Claudette, le sujet principal de ce recueil. J'avais souvent entendu parler de lui, de son mariage avec Giselle, de la guerre qui les a séparés à peine deux semaines plus tard, de sa captivité et de son espoir de retour pour voir sa fille, qu'il n'aura finalement pas connue, et de sa mort à Langenberg dans une usine allemande en novembre 1944. Mais un jour de 2012, ma mère ayant ressorti les documents le concernant, elle me propose de tout emporter. Une fois l'émotion passée, car beaucoup de lettres expriment l'amour de Giselle et Jean, j'ai décidé de les publier avec les autres documents les accompagnant, pour raconter, non pas avec mes mots, mais avec les images et les mots de Jean et de Giselle, le drame que la guerre leur a fait vivre. Mon premier but était d'offrir ce témoignage à ma famille et à ses générations futures, et puis je me suis dit que d'autres personnes pourraient y trouver quelque chose, comme une histoire émouvante, une réflexion sur la guerre ou un témoignage historique. Après avoir terminé cet ouvrage, je me suis dis aussi qu'on entend souvent parler de guerres et de morts, mais il ne faut pas oublier que leurs proches sont aussi des victimes, plus nombreuses, et rarement dénombrées. Souvenons-nous de la phrase qui suit, écrite par les anciens combattants présents lors de l'inhumation de Jean en France: "Puisse ton sacrifice mon cher Jean servir de leçon à tous, nous qui avons eu la chance de revenir, unissons-nous pour lutter afin de ne plus revoir pareil
About the Author: Gilles Venturini, scientifique et universitaire, est le fils de Claudette, le petit-fils de Jean et de Giselle, et l'arrière petit-fils de Germaine. Il ne se considère pas comme l'auteur de cet ouvrage, mais plutôt comme le "metteur en page" des documents conservés dans sa famille.
