Prologue À Ludovic Halévy Mon cher maître, Permettez-moi de vous présenter madame Manchaballe, très proche parente assurément de votre ancienne amie, madame Cardinal. Qui sait, une de ses filles, peut-être, Pauline ou Virginie? En effet, vous nous avez conté l'histoire des Petites Cardinal, alors que j'envoyais à notre pauvre ami Marcelin, pour la Vie Parisienne, mes premiers essais littéraires de sous-lieutenant alors que MM. de Saint-Pierre, Davilliers, de Caux, Massa, Magnan, de Varannes, etc., faisaient les beaux jours de l'Opéra de la rue Le Peletier. Évidemment, c'était moins grand, moins luxueux, moins éclairé qu'aujourd'hui, mais c'était plus chaud, plus capitonné, avec un tas de petits coins propices aux douces causeries. Au lieu de monter comme maintenant au foyer de la danse, on y descendait par quelques marches toujours encombrées par les coryphées. C'était le quartier général des Fiocre, des Villeroy, des Trois Valets, des Volta, des Léontine Rousseau... et des petites Cardinal. Où sont les neiges d'antan! Le foyer n'est plus tout à fait ce qu'il était alors, malgré les séductions de mesdames Chabot, Invernizzi, Torri, Tremblay, Violat, Lecouvey, Roumier, et toujours des mères de danseuses, et madame Cardinal a certainement passé son cabas et son parapluie à madame Manchaballe. Aujourd'hui, mon cher maître, devenu immortel, vous sacrifiez à des dieux plus sérieux, et, en dehors des premières, l'on ne vous aperçoit plus guère dans les coulisses de l'Opéra; mais si vous y veniez quelque soir, je suis sûr que vous éprouveriez le même plaisir que jadis à écouter les petits potins de ces dames, les aventures de Judith, de Rébecca, de Caroline Manchaballe, de ces nouvelles qui sont entrées dans la carrière quand leurs anciennes n'y étaient plus, et qui y ont trouvé, avec leur poussière, sinon les traces de leurs vertus, du moins les souvenirs de votre esprit. Permettez-moi donc de vous dédier très humblement ce petit livre qui vous revient de droit, et pour que madame Manchaballe soit aussi joyeuse qu'aimable, Nous vous prions d'en être le parrain. About the Author: Richard de L'Isle de Falcon de Saint-Geniès, dit Richard O'Monroy, né en 1849 à Paris où il est mort en 1916, est un romancier et nouvelliste français. Avec Gyp et Ludovic Halévy, il est l'un des conteurs de la vie parisienne dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle. Sorti de l'école de Saint-Cyr en 1870, il est capitaine de cavalerie lorsqu'il est acculé à la démission en 1891, ce qui lui permet de se consacrer pleinement à l'écriture. Il contribue à La Vie parisienne et au Gil Blas des saynètes de la vie d'officier, des croquis parisiens, des romans et des nouvelles réunis par la suite en une cinquantaine de volumes. Il est également l'auteur de quelques vaudevilles et comédies en un acte. Son style d'allure vive et sa gaieté sentimentale ont su plaire pendant un temps à un certain public.
