About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A journey from Asturias to Havana. The story of the founders of ZARA, the celebrated Cuban restaurant in Madrid.

"An honest, clean, entertaining, exciting, heartbreaking, soothing, and warm text. A book to understand how complicated life can be, and how love, dealt in daily doses, paves the way to happiness." --Pedro Zuazua, El País

A NOVEL BASED ON TRUE EVENTS.

Pepe, a young Asturian fond of drawing, leaves Spain after the Civil War and migrates to Cuba to make his fortune. Inés, a young Cuban teacher, the daughter of Asturian immigrants settled on the island, casually meets Pepe at the foot of the stairway, stepping out of a recital at the Asturian Center in Havana. From that brief encounter, their fates become forever intertwined.

The story of two generations of immigrants that risked it all, sometimes to win, sometimes to lose. Struggle and work were their philosophy to face the blows of life. Family love was a shield and a sanctuary in adversity.

With a moving and detailed style, Inés M. Llanos takes her family history to illuminate the journey of sacrifice and love her parents made from the revolutionary Havana to Madrid, via Asturias, the land of her ancestors, in what is meant to be an homage to the memory of everyday heroes that, same as them, knew how to overcome the ferocity of life, the separations, the injustice, the disappointments, and regardless of their suffering, looked for happiness and found it.

The Teacher and the Painter speaks of dreams and hope, of the complexity of life, of the value of passion, of the revolution that changed everything, of the things they lost along the way and the ones brought about by the pain of that loss, of the grief over everything that could not be, and of the gratitude for what was given, of the importance of such a legacy.
