Prima di Tiziano venne Victor, io non lo sapevo. Voi?

Occupandomi della pagina facebook, instagram e youtube dedicati a Tiziano Terzani da quasi venti anni ormai, mi sono trovato a riguardare una delle sue interviste video per la centesima (millesima?) volta. Si tratta dell'intervista a Carta Bianca, condotta da Leo Manfrini, per TSI nel 1987. E mi è saltato all'occhio, anzi - per meglio dire - all'orecchio, un passaggio davvero interessante: Tiziano Terzani parla con ammirazione di un collega, un certo Victor Zorza, che non ha mai conosciuto di persona ma dichiara di ammirare molto, fino a definirlo suo "maestro". La cosa più interessante è che questo Victor Zorza aveva fatto una scelta di vita molto particolare, a dire di Tiziano: aveva preso la pensione a 65 anni e si era ritirato. A vita privata? No, era andato a vivere in un villaggetto in India e - da lì - scriveva le storie del villaggio adattandole alla realtà occidentale, parlava dei "non raccontati" ovvero di tutti coloro che non sono protagonisti di eventi violenti, non fanno parte dei nomi sotto i riflettori, insomma, fanno la vera storia ma nessuno ne parla.

Questo fatto mi ha interessato molto perché questo giornalista esperto di cultura slava per il Guardian e per il Washington Post e definito da Tiziano come suo maestro... praticamente aveva fatto la stessa scelta che Tiziano avrebbe fatto poco dopo: il suo successivo libro avrebbe infatti parlato della Russia (Buonanotte Signor Lenin, 1992) e poi andrà, come tutti sappiamo, a spendere molto del tempo del resto della sua vita in India.

Quindi, a tutti gli effetti, pare proprio che questo Victor Zorza sia stato o molto importante e di grande ispirazione per Tiziano o - quantomeno - davvero molto simile. Mi sono quindi incuriosito: chi era Victor Zorza? Perché io non lo avevo mai sentito nominare!

In italiano, tanto per cominciare, non si trova niente su di lui.

Victor Zorza (nato Israel Wermuth; 19 ottobre 1925 - 20 marzo 1996) è stato un giornalista polacco che ha contribuito alla comprensione dell'Occidente dell'Unione Sovietica, e in seguito è stato noto per il lavoro pionieristico nella promozione delle cure palliative in Russia.
