Le "Mahatma Gandhi" de Romain Rolland Un livre de Romain Rolland n'est pas qu'une nouveauté. Il fait appel à la pensée tout entière de son lecteur, que celui-ci l'approuve ou le haïsse. (...) Celui qui vient de paraître s'attache à Mahatma Gandhi, l'apôtre de l'Inde opprimée. Ce choix n'étonnera aucun de ceux qui s'efforcent de comprendre Rolland. D'autres l'ont accusé de dispersion. Tous les actes [de Gandhi] dérivent d'une pensée à deux étages: c'est-à-dire que sa politique repose sur une puissante substruction religieuse et morale, sorte de Credo hindou pénétré d'évangélisme médiéval et de tolstoïsme conscient. Il garde, comme symboles moraux, le culte de la vache et le principe des castes, mais basé sur le devoir social et non plus sur le privilège. Il condamne la civilisation mensongère telle que l'Europe la pratique; il s'attaque au machinisme, à la puissance de l'argent; c'est par l'arme d'amour (Salyâgraha), c'est par la souffrance purificatrice que l'Inde se rendra digne du Swaraj: l'indépendance attendue. Romain Rolland marque, avec raison, l'immense signification de cette victoire morale, de ce désarmement transmué en force, comme dit Tagore. Aussi faut-il accueillir ce livre avec reconnaissance, même si l'on fait abstraction des tendances qu'il exprime et qui l'ont suscité. Il ouvre une clairière dans la forêt de l'âme hindoue. Il révèle une figure étrangement grande, contradictoire peut-être à nos yeux d'Occidentaux rationalistes, mais attachante en ses contrastes mêmes. Cet apôtre du rouet qui déclare la guerre au machinisme, ce médiéval épris d'ascétisme a su donner au mouvement national de son pays une signification qui dépasse l'Inde tout entière. Quoi qu'il advienne de l'Inde, Gandhi ne passera pas; car il a vu dans le Swaraj plus et mieux qu'un gain politique: le règne de la justice sur toute la terre . Il a compris que la non-violence, par dessus les besoins de la tactique momentanée, apparaissait comme l'Annonciatrice de la paix du monde .
