"DE HACER CUMPLIR LA MALDICIÓN DE UNA MONJA SE ENCARGA EL DIABLO EN PERSONA". Esto fue lo que le dijo atemorizado Don Pedo González de Hoyos, párroco de Santa María la Blanca, a Iñigo Palomino al momento de escuchar su confesión. Nos encontramos en Sevilla, a mitad del siglo XVII y a principios del reinado de Carlos II. Comienza ya el declive de la ciudad más hermosa y cosmopolita del Imperio Español. Pero aun así, el arte del siglo de Oro y especialmente el barroco andaluz, continúa brillando en los talleres de Murillo o en el de Pedro Roldán. Festejos de cañas y toros, comedias de Lope y de Tirso y las procesiones de Semana Santa, marcan el ritmo vital y apasionado de un ciudad que aún en decadencia, sigue siendo el corazón de un Imperio donde aún no se pone el Sol. Es en este ambiente que un joven aprendiz del taller del maestro Murillo, don Iñigo Palomino, un señorito desenfadado, sin complicaciones y perteneciente a una de las mejores familias de la ciudad, como consecuencia de unos amoríos desgraciados con una novicia en clausura, de pronto se enfrenta al horror creciente de una maldición que se va cumpliendo día a día de manera inexorable. Y es así como en medio de uno que otro opíparo banquete en la mejor fonda de la judería, de devociones en Santa María la Blanca, de duelos en las Atarazanas, de amores apasionados con una actriz famosa, y de obras y entremeses en el Corral de Comedias de los Alcázares Reales, la maldición, supervisada en su cumplimiento por un misterioso personaje que visita a Iñigo cada noche, sigue manifestándose en forma paulatina hasta que, para desesperación, espanto y terror del mozo, termina por cumplirse en su totalidad. Es a este personaje diabólico y a la maldición que mantiene a Iñigo postrado en una especie de muerte en vida, y siempre teniendo como telón de fondo la omnipresencia tenebrosa del tribunal del Santo Oficio, que se enfrenta, con valentía y todos sus recursos metafísicos, Don Pedro González, exorcista aficionado y confesor del joven.
