About the Book

English summary: The present volume explores manners of saying and expression in Malagasy through an in-depth analysis of the seemingly analogous terms hoy, hoe, and hono. For example, hoy, rather than signifying communicate through words, means declare, make a declaration. Thus, a Malagasy speaker would add an emphatic hoy aho, say I, to declare his complete dedication or commitment. These terms also carry specific relationships for the speaker. These three terms organize communications between interlocutors and provides the speaker with tools to accomplish a variety of spoken acts.
