About the Book

The Manifestation of Buddhas is a book celebrating the representation of the divine Shakyamuni, Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, in all known forms across the world. Summary of the Book Siddhartha Gautama, the Enlightened One, was one of the greatest preachers of the message of peace and non-violence the world has ever seen. Stricken with grief at the passing of their lord and Guru, the followers of Gautama Buddha sought an art form that had never seen the likes of their devotion. They turned their grief into inexpressibly beautiful sculptures and statues, carving and etching their master back to life through their work. In gold, silver and bronze they shaped life into lifeless statuettes through their sheer devotion to the art and to the man who shaped nations with his teachings. Slowly, this art form evolved into a religion in its own right, and took on the greatest stories of Gautama Buddha, and captured them in stone, gold and silver. In this book, Dr. Shashibala shows readers how the infant art changed over centuries and millennia, becoming the beautiful stupas and statues visible all around the world today. Through their devotion and patience, the artists eked out other forms of the Buddha, bringing alive stories of his myriad forms and giving life to legend and reality to a religion. A celebration of the glory and beauty of Buddhist sculptures, this book shows readers how the Buddha has manifested himself time and again through the fingertips of his devotees. About Dr. Shashibala Dr. Shashibala is an Indian orientalist and a researcher at the International Academy of Indian Culture. A former adjunct faculty at the National Museum Institute, New Delhi, she enjoys travelling widely and working on art treasures and manuscripts of Asian countries. A staunch supporter of Buddhism and a scholar in all the Buddhist art-forms, she has also written: Buddhist Art, Divine Art and Buddhist Art and Thought.
