Thomas war in einem großen, alten Hause geboren, das zurückgezogen und ernst in einer breiten Ecke des Marktes lag, im Mittelpunkt der Stadt. Es hatte weniger Stockwerke und viel höhere Fenster als die Nachbarhäuser, die es hart begrenzten. Hinter dem sonneverbrannten braunen Torbogen lag ein kühler, hoher Flur, dessen Decke zwei wuchtige weiße Säulen stützten; eine weite Treppe mit sehr niedrigen Stufen führte empor bis zur ersten Plattform, bis zu dem quadratisch geschnittenen, riesigen weißen Schiebefenster, gegen das die leuchtenden Blätter der Fliederbäume klopften: Da lag ein weiter Garten mit alten Bäumen und wilden Rasenflächen, und ein tiefer Hof, überschattet von dem hohen Grün des Gartens, und stumm und alt schaute die lange Fensterreihe einer ungeahnten Seitenfront des Hauses auf ihn nieder. Wo sie endete, war ungewiß. Es war auch ungewiß, was auf der anderen Seite des Gartens lag. Thomas wußte es, seitdem er sich einmal durch die dichte hohe Buschmauer bis an den schwärzlichen Lattenzaun hindrängte: Da sah er tief unter sich ein schmales, dunkles Wasser ziehen, dahinter kauerten verbaute kleine Häuser. - In seine Tiefe hinein nahm der Garten endlich jählings ein Ende: Es legte sich eine rauhe, breite, fensterlose Wand davor, an der in großen Abständen auf dicken schwarzen Holzplatten schwere eiserne, verrostete Ringe hingen, unbeweglich, ein Jahr wie das andere. Die Wand mußte wohl zu einem Gebäude gehören, denn es lag ein düsteres, schräges Dach darüber, in dessen einziger Luke einmal ein rohes Gesicht erschien, und eine Hand dazu. Dies Erlebnis verschwieg Thomas selbst seiner Mutter. Aber unbeweglich, ein Jahr wie das andere, sah alles wieder herab, und er vergaß sein Mißtrauen. Zuweilen aber, ohne daß er selbst es wußte, kehrte er sich von dieser Mauer ab und schritt dem entgegenliegenden Ende des Gartens zu: Durch die Stämme hindurch nahte sich die weite Steinhalle zu ebener Erde, mehr und mehr hob sich der grüne Blättervorhang, es erschienen di
