Dieses Zitat Plutarchs charakterisiert das Bild, das lange Zeit in der Geschichtsschreibung von Marc Anton und Kleopatra vorherrschte und das auch die übrigen antiken Quellen von den beiden mehr oder weniger ausgeprägt zeichnen. Kleopatra gilt als Frau zwischen zwei Extremen: zum einen als Herrscherin, die mit allen Mitteln, die ihr als Königin zur Verfügung standen, ihre politischen Ziele durchsetzte, zum anderen als Geliebte zweier großer Römer. Die Beziehung zu Marc Anton ist es, die sie endgültig in die "Mühlen der propagandistischen Auseinandersetzung" zwischen Antonius und Octavian treibt. Marc Anton wiederum geht in die Geschichtsschreibung ein als ein von Kleopatra beherrschter, gegen das traditionelle Römertum eingestellter und von Octavian besiegter Politiker, und keineswegs als ernstzunehmende politische Persönlichkeit. Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es nicht sein, mit den Gerüchten um die schillernde Persönlichkeit Kleopatras und ihres Geliebten Marc Antons aufzuräumen, sondern vielmehr sich den Gründen für die verzerrten Bilder der beiden in der historischen Rezeption zu nähern. Dabei wird man feststellen, dass die Art und Weise wie die beiden von der Nachwelt wahrgenommen werden, den Propagandakampf Octavians widerspiegelt. Man kommt nicht umhin, dem späteren Augustus eine große Schuld an der Tatsache zuzuweisen, dass die beiden als Zerrbilder in die Geschichtsschreibung eingegangen sind, Zerrbilder, mit denen erst die moderne Forschung versucht aufzuräumen und sich den wahren Persönlichkeiten, die sich unter dem Schleier augusteischer Propaganda verstecken, zu nähern.
