About the Book

Le 2 décembre 1910 a lieu un véritable coup d'État littéraire: une ancienne bergère et ouvrière du nom de Marguerite Audoux remporte le prestigieux Prix Femina pour son roman autobiographique Marie-Claire.
Les ventes dépassent les cent mille exemplaires. Le roman est traduit en allemand et en anglais, ainsi qu'en espéranto, en russe, en catalan, en suédois, en espagnol, en danois, en slovène...

Marguerite est née en 1863 dans le Cher, sa mère meurt lorsqu'elle n'a que trois ans et son père l'abandonne. S'ensuit neuf années difficiles passées à l'orphelinat et à l'Hôpital général de Bourges. Entre treize et dix-huit ans la jeune fille est placée comme bergère en Sologne à Sainte-Montaine. À Paris, elle connaît une vie de misère notamment comme couturière. Marguerite perd son seul et unique enfant à l'âge de vingt-ans. Malgré sa situation, elle recueille sa nièce Yvonne qui, à seize ans, se prostitue dans le quartier des Halles.
Mais cette nouvelle épreuve participera à l'émergence de l'auteur: Yvonne fréquente en effet un jeune homme qui a pour ami un certain André Gide... Le manuscrit des souvenirs de Marguerite séduit un groupe d'intellectuels et fini par tomber entre les mains d'Octave Mirbeau, le célèbre auteur du Journal d'une femme de chambre.

Les deux romans Marie-Claire et l'atelier de Marie-Claire retracent la vie de Marguerite, sa petite enfance puis ses années à Paris.

Marie-Claire est une oeuvre d'un grand goût. Sa simplicité, sa vérité, son élégance d'esprit, sa profondeur, sa nouveauté sont impressionnantes. Tout y est à sa place, les choses, les paysages, les gens. Ils sont marqués, dessinés d'un trait, du trait qu'il faut pour les rendre vivants et inoubliables. On n'en souhaite jamais un autre, tant celui-ci est juste, pittoresque, coloré, à son plan. Ce qui nous étonne surtout, ce qui nous subjugue, c'est la force de l'action intérieure, et c'est toute la lumière douce et chantante qui se lève sur ce livre...

Marguerite est douée d'imagination, mais entendons-nous, d'une imagination noble, ardente et magnifique, qui n'est pas celle des jeunes femmes qui rêvent et des romanciers qui combinent. Elle n'est ni à côté ni au delà de la vie [ ... ] Lisez Marie-Claire... Et quand vous l'aurez lue, sans vouloir blesser personne, vous vous demanderez quel est parmi nos écrivains - et je parle des plus glorieux - celui qui eût pu écrire un tel livre, avec cette mesure impeccable, cette pureté et cette grandeur rayonnantes.
