An einem Herbsttag im zweiten Viertel des 16. Jahrhunderts werden in London zwei Knaben geboren. Tom Canty im Armenviertel und Prinz Eduard, der lang ersehnte Thronfolger, im königlichen Schloss. Durch einen Zufall treffen sich die beiden eines Tages und wollen die Welt des jeweils anderen kennenlernen. Als der Prinz seine Kleider mit dem kleinen Bettelknaben tauscht, sind sie überrascht, wie sehr sie sich ähneln. Da wird auch schon der kleine Prinz in Toms Lumpen von der Wache davongejagt und bekommt das harte Los seiner Untertanen am eigenen Leib zu spüren. Währendessen wird im Schloss der Bettelknabe auf die Krönung vorbereitet. Der junge Prinz Edward aus dem Hause Tudor, von dem dieses Buch handelt, hat wirklich gelebt. Er wurde 1537 geboren und war der lang ersehnte Sohn von König Heinrich VIII. Nach dem Tode seines Vaters im Jahre 1547 wurde Prinz Edward VI. im Alter von nicht ganz zehn Jahren zum König von England und Irland gekrönt. Unter seiner Regierung wurden einige grausame Gesetze des herrischen Heinrich VIII. aufgehoben oder entschärft. Der junge König starb 1553, im Alter von sechzehn Jahren, an einer Lungenerkrankung. Tatsächlich könnte sich die Geschichte, die Mark Twain uns erzählt, so zugetragen haben... ... About the Author: Mark Twain ist das Pseudonym des 1835 in Florida geborenen und 1910 in Connecticut verstorbenen US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Er ist vor allem als Autor der Bücher über die Abenteuer von Tom Sawyer und Huckleberry Finn weltweit bekannt. Besonders seine humoristischen, von Lokalkolorit und genauen Beobachtungen sozialen Verhaltens geprägten Erzählungen sowie seine scharfzüngige Kritik an der amerikanischen Gesellschaft machten ihn berühmt. In seinen Werken beschreibt er den alltäglichen Rassismus und seine Protagonisten durchschauen die Heuchelei und Verlogenheit der herrschenden Verhältnisse.
