Magisterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Theaterwissenschaft, Tanz, Note: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Fachbereich 07 Musikwissenschaft), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Gekürzte Subventionen, schwindende Besucherzahlen - und gleichzeitig steigende Betriebskosten. Vor diesem Szenario ringen derzeit viele öffentliche Bühnen in Deutschland um ihre Existenz. Die Situation allerdings ist nicht neu. Bereits 1930 urteilte Karl Holl in der Frankfurter Zeitung: "Die Not der Oper ist der besonders schwer wiegende, besonders komplizierte Fall der allgemeinen Not des Theaters. Not im Zeichen der Kulturkrise, der Sozialkrise, der Wirtschaftskrise". Seitdem wurden zahlreiche Lösungswege diskutiert und ausprobiert. Seit Ende der 80er Jahre wurde in diese Diskussion der Bereich des Marketings als ein möglicher Ausweg aufgenommen. In einer Hinwendung zum Marketing sehen mittlerweile viele Theaterverantwortliche eine Möglichkeit, der andauernden Krise ihrer Institution zu begegnen und schließlich zu entkommen. Dabei ist Marketing als wirtschaftliche Disziplin gerade im Kunst- und Kulturbereich umstritten. Kritiker fürchten den Ausverkauf der Kunst bzw. die Degradierung der Kunst zur Ware. Dieser Vorwurf ist durchaus gerechtfertigt, beschränkt man Marketing auf die reine Verkaufsförderung. Verkaufen ist jedoch nur eine von vielen Aufgaben des Marketings und häufig nicht einmal die wichtigste. Welcher Art die unternehmerischen Ziele dabei sind, bleibt dem jeweiligen Unternehmer selbst überlassen. Beim öffentlichen Theater hätten z.B. Ziele wie gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz oder Bekanntheitsgrad Vorrang vor reinem Gewinnstreben. In einem planvollen Marketingkonzept besteht eine Chance für die Theater, die Öffentlichkeit optimal anzusprechen und dabei sowohl die Besucher als auch die öffentlichen Geldgeber nachhaltig für ihre Institution einzunehmen.
