Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Theorien, Modelle, Begriffe, Note: 1,7, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Professur für Vergleichende Bildtheorie), Veranstaltung: Bild- und Medientheorie: Einführung in die Medientheorie, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Medien sind - das ist eine von Marshall McLuhans grundlegenden Ansichten - Ausweitungen des Körpers, Technologien, Werkzeuge, Artefakte, die die Möglichkeiten des Menschen, seine Wahrnehmungsfähigkeit, seine Macht sowie seine Schnelligkeit steigern. Diese Begrifflichkeiten haben die damalige Zeit geprägt und viel Nachdruck hinterlassen. Doch kann man diese auch auf unser heutiges "Medienzeitalter" übertragen? Wie stark haben die Medien die Gesellschaft geprägt? Ist der Inhalt der Medien wirklich so trivial? Kann man heute noch zwischen heißen und kalten Medien unterscheiden? In dieser Arbeit möchte ich einige ausgewählte Thesen von McLuhan in Anlehnung an diese Fragen untersuchen. Dazu beziehe ich mich auf die ersten beiden Kapitel seines wohl bekanntesten Werkes "Die magischen Kanäle: Understanding Media" von 1964. An Hand des ersten Kapitels "Das Medium ist die Botschaft" werde ich die Bedeutung des Inhaltes für die Wirkung der Medien diskutieren, sowie die Frage, ob Medien eine Bedrohung für unsere Gesellschaft darstellen oder der Mensch die kompletten Möglichkeiten seiner eigenen Kreationen sogar selbst behindert. Im Anschluss daran werde ich mit dem zweiten Kapitels "Heiße Medien und kalte" als Grundlage die Unterscheidung in diese zwei Termini in Bezug auf ihre Gültigkeit analysieren und die unterschiedlichen Wirkungen heißer und kalter Medien (ebenfalls in Hinsicht auf den bisherigen verschiedenen zeitlichen Etablierungsphasen der einzelnen Medien) diskutieren. Doch zu allererst sollte McLuhans Theorie kurz dargestellt werden.
