Martin Flamig leitete zwischen 1971 und 1990 den Dresdner Kreuzchor. Aus dem sachsischen Aue stammend, wirkte er in den 1950er Jahren als Direktor der Kirchenmusikschule und als Dozent an der Hochschule fur Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. 1960 ging er in die Schweiz, war als Chorleiter sowie als Professor tatig und widmete sich der zeitgenossischen Musik. In seiner Schweizer Zeit sammelte er als DDR-Burger Erfahrungen in einer Gesellschaft, die sich erheblich von derjenigen seines Heimatlandes unterschied. Aus den Selbstzeugnissen wird die umfangreiche Tatigkeit des Chores in den beiden letzten Jahrzehnten der DDR lebendig. Es war eine produktive und konfliktreiche Zeit im Spannungsfeld von Staat und Kirche. Einerseits sangen die Kruzianer weiterhin regelmassig in der Kreuzkirche, andererseits hauften sich weltliche Auftritte. Nach zehnjahriger Pause gastierte der Chor 1978 wieder im westlichen Ausland, so erstmals in Asien (Japan). Eingerahmt wird die Textauswahl durch biographische Dokumente, in die Schreiben Dritter Eingang finden. Da geht es um die historische Verwurzelung des Kreuzchores im Christentum, um die Konzertpraxis und Aufnahmetatigkeit fur Schallplatte und Rundfunk. Aussagestark sind auch Flamigs Reden auf den jahrlichen Choreltern-Nachmittagen. Dabei tritt der komplexe Alltag dieses renommierten Knabenchores plastisch vor Augen. In den Texten wird Martin Flamig (1913-1998) immer wieder als Wanderer zwischen den Welten erkennbar. Er behielt auch in heiklen Situationen klaren Kopf, sprach Probleme offen an und hatte die Zukunft im Blick. Der Herausgeber Matthias Herrmann war Kruzianer unter Rudolf Mauersberger und Martin Flamig und verbindet im vorliegenden Buch wissenschaftliche Akribie mit eigenem Erleben. Kreuzkantor Roderich Kreile erinnert im Geleitwort an seine erste Begegnung mit Martin Flamig 1996 in der Schweiz.
