About the Book

Comic verse, saucy sonnets and mathematical poems as an entertaining proliferation of wittiness on the barren ground of the ivory tower? Alexander Mehlmann, a mathematician well known for his "tongue-in-cheek" formalistic excursions into the realms of literature, can evidently prove that there is a rhyme and reason in it. Traded for years as an insider's tip at Vienna's University of Technology, this uncommon output beheld 17 years ago the blinding light of printer's ink, experiencing just several month later the cruel fate of being out of stock. Clearly, an unacceptable situation for the scattered fan community.
Enriched with four amazing and elaborate themes, the newly issued Mathematische Moritaten (e.g. Mathematical Ballads) substantiate that some delicate plants of poetry may flourish even in the rigorous garden of mathematics. Welcome to an amusing look at the queen of science, mythology and long-lasting mathematical myths through the lens of comic verses, anagrammatic poems and apocryphal parables. While the majority of the poems are written with the German speaking audience in mind, the collection includes in addition a few translations into English and Romanian.

About the Author: Alexander Mehlmann was born in Romania in 1949. After emigrating to Austria at the age of 13, he studied mathematics at Vienna's University of Technology. Following graduation, he worked for the next 42 years teaching and researching at his alma mater.
A now retired associate professor, he ist still lecturing on "Game Theoretic Modeling" and on "Mathematics and Literature", aiming to guide students towards refreshing mathematical thoughts by means of a "tongue-in-cheek" route to the legend of Faust, as well as to some game theoretical facets of Greek mythology. By using apocryphal stories, short and long poems, as well as mathematical arguments, his lectures generate an intriguing look at literature through the lens of mathematics, bringing the mathematics into poetical focus at the same time.
