Weber vermutet darin einen Zusammenhang zwischen einzelnen Facetten des christlichen Glaubens und dem in der Wende vom 19. in das 20. Jahrhundert aufkommenden modernen Kapitalismus. Bereits kurz nach seiner ersten Veröffentlichung in den Jahren 1904/1905 lösten Webers Schriften eine intensive Diskussion in der Wissenschaft aus, die augenscheinlich nie beendet wurde. Daran anknüpfend zeigt sich das Bild einer andauernden kontroversen Auseinandersetzung mit den Ausführungen Webers. Für die Einen zählt Webers Aufsatzfolge zu seinen bekanntesten Schriften. Englert bezeichnet sie sogar als "Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Soziologie" (Englert 2019). Andere Kritiker, beispielsweise Rachfahl, stellten bereits kurz nach dem Erscheinen von Webers Aufsatzfolge einen Zusammenhang zwischen Kapitalismus und Religion in Frage. So auch Steinert, der Max Webers Ausführungen rückblickend als nicht belegt und zu einem Großteil sogar als widerlegt bezeichnet. Vor diesem Hintergrund nimmt die vorliegende Hausarbeit den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs der letzten 20 Jahre in den Blick und befasst sich mit der Forschungsfrage: Wie hat sich der wissenschaftliche Diskurs in den letzten 20 Jahren zu Max Webers Ausführungen "Die protestantische Ethik und der Geist des Kapitalismus" im Hinblick auf seine gegenwärtige Bedeutung und Anwendbarkeit entwickelt?
