Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Soziales System, Sozialstruktur, Klasse, Schichtung, Note: 1,3, Universität Duisburg-Essen, Veranstaltung: Geschichte der Soziologie, 7 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Um sich ein Verständnis des eigentlichen Ertrages der Protestantischen Ethik zu erschließen, ist es notwendig sich zu vergegenwärtigen, welche Vorgeschichte die Protestantische Ethik hatte, welchen wissenschaftlichen Diskussionszusammenhängen sie entsprang und wie und warum sie von Weber thematisiert wurde. Das zu Ende gehende 19. und das anbrechende 20. Jahrhundert war die Zeit des sich fest etablierenden, neuzeitlichen Kapitalismus. (Küenzlen 1980: 13). Vor allem aber waren es zeitgenossische Studien, die wie Weber auch, die Fragen nach der Herkunft, den Entstehungsfaktoren und Ursachen des neuzeitlichen Kapitalismus stellten. Dies galt zunächst für alle marxistischen Theorien und für die Arbeiten von K. Kautskys und E. Bernstein, die Weber beim Verfassen der protestantischen Ethik durchaus geläufig waren. In unmittelbarer Berührung stand Weber auch mit den Arbeiten von G. Simmels "Philosophie des Geldes" (1900) und W. Sombarts "Der moderne Kapitalismus" (1902). Alle diese Arbeiten setzten sich im Prinzip mit der gleichen Frage auseinander: Die Untersuchung der Entstehungsursachen des modernen Kapitalismus und dessen zunehmender Einfluss auf das menschliche Handeln und auf die Entwicklung des menschlichen Bewusstseins. Ein zentrales Merkmal des allgemeinen Bewusstseins in Webers Epoche war ein ungebrochenes Vertrauen in die moderne Wirtschaftsverfassung, den Staat und die tragende Kraft der Rationalität. So befasst sich auch Weber mit der wichtigen Frage nach der Genese und den Stützen der modernen, das menschliche Handeln und Denken umfassenden Rationalität. Der Ruhm Gottes, dem die erwählten Christen in rastloser Berufsarbeit dienten, das war der wissenschaftliche Fortschritt, den Weber befördern wollte.
