About the Book

This book is published on dedication of Prof. Dr. Igor Sevostianov who passed away in 2021. He was a great Russian-American scientist who made significant contributions in the field of mechanics of heterogeneous media. This book contains research papers from his friends and colleagues in this research field.

About the Author:

Prof. Dr.-Ing.habil. Dr.h.c.mult. Holm Altenbach is a member of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics and the International Research Center on Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems (M&MoCS), Italy. He has held positions at the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg and Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, both in Germany. He graduated from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1985 (diploma in Dynamics and Strength of Machines) and was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1983 and his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree in 1987 at the same institute. He is currently a full professor of Engineering Mechanics at the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Mechanics (since 2011), where he has been the acting director since 2015. His areas of scientific interest include general theory of elastic and inelastic plates and shells, creep and damage mechanics, strength theories, and nano- and micromechanics.

Victor A. Eremeyev, Ph.D., Dr. hab., is Associate Professor at University of Cagliari. His research focuses on continuum and structural mechanics, including the following topics: nonlinear elasticity, generalized continua (micropolar, micromorphic, stress- and strain- gradient media), metamaterials, surface elasticity, plates and shells, nano- and micromechanics, piezo- and flexoelectricity, flexomagneticity, and surface waves. He graduated from the Department of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics at the Rostov State University (Rostov on Don, Russia) in 1985. In 1990, he received a PhD degree from the same university; he also holds a doctor of science degree from 2004, at the Institute of Problems of Mechanical Engineering of Russian Academy of Science (St. Petersburg, Russia). He was appointed as assistant, associate and full professor at Rostov State University/South Federal University (1988-2017). Later, he worked as a researcher at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (2010-2011) and Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg (2012-2015), Germany, as associate professor at Rzeszow University of Technology, Rzeszow (2015-2017), and as a full ´ professor at Gdansk University of Technology, Poland (2017-2021). In 2020, he joined the University of Cagliari, Italy.

Mikhail Yu. Gutkin, Ph.D. (1990), Dr. Sci. Habil. (1998), is the Chief Researcher and Head of the Lab of Nanomaterials Mechanics and Theory of Defects at the Institute of Problems of Mechanical Engineering, Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia); Professor at the Institute of Advances Data Transfer Systems, ITMO University; Professor at the Higher School of Mechanics and Control Processes, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Areas of expertise are the Theory of defects in solids; Physics and mechanics of photonics structures; Micromechanics of plastic deformation and fracture of nanostructural materials; Defect structures in growing hexagonal crystals; Description of defects using gradient and surface elasticity theory; Boundary problems of elasticity theory for defects in finite and elastically heterogeneous structures. Graduated from the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (former Leningrad Polytechnic Institute called after M.I. Kalinin) in 1985.
