About the Book

The stories, essays, and poems of June Rose speak not only of time gone by, but of a contemporary woman giving us personal glimpses of her rich and grateful journey. Born in 1917, June's early years on a rural Wisconsin farm gave her the outlook that shaped later life as a navy wife, mother of four, founder of a best selling cook-book, and advocate for the blind through braille transcription. In her first writings June tells of rural life: the sometimes isolation, and the joy taken in small things. Farm and family could be an entire universe in a way that may be difficult to imagine today. Living through the Great Depression, she never spent much time missing what she didn't have. As June Rose chronicles her history and journey from country life to a small town and beyond, her core values sustain her through the challenges that always come wherever one may be planted.
About the Author: During my growing up years in the 1920's - 1930's, I never asked my parents personal questions about their own lives as children or teen-agers. At the time, I probably couldn't imagine them as ever being young. To me, they had always been old, just as I suppose my children thought of me, their mother, as being old. It would be years later before I began to wonder about them. What were their early years like? What games did they play as a child? What did they do for entertainment? What did they want to be when they grew up? Did their dreams come true? Who did they date before they found each other? Did they fall in love with anyone else before that? Did their love last? By the time I began wondering about what my parents were really like, it was too late to be asking questions. All that interesting information is gone forever. I began writing in the late 1970's after taking English courses at the University. The stories described particular events or phases in my life and the more I wrote, the more ideas came. With so many stories in mind, writing became a time-consuming avocation. I wanted to leave answers to questions that my children would wonder about. My stories might even solve puzzles within their own lives. And that is why I write.
