Chr. auf Salamis geboren, zieht sich Euripides zeit seines Lebens immer wieder zurück in eine Höhle auf der Insel vor der attischen Küste, um dort seine zahlreichen Dramen zu verfassen. Als regelmäßiger Teilnehmer der Dionysien geht er zu Lebzeiten viermal und einmal posthum als Sieger aus den Theaterfestspielen hervor. Sogar sein Freund Sokrates, der dem Theater wenig abgewinnen kann, besucht die Spielstätten, wenn er ein neues Stück aufführen lässt. Mit Euripides stirbt 406 v. Chr. in Pella einer der bis heute meistgespielten Dramatiker der Welt. Der Legende nach haben wilde Hunde seinen Körper zerrissen.
