About the Book

This book is part of the book series titled Natural Products Chemistry of Global Plants, and examines the rich plant diversity of Turkey, with descriptions of the plants and pharmacognosy properties. There is a focus on the chemistry of natural products and areas rich in folklore and botanical medicinal uses are covered with a particular interest in the region of Anatolia. This book focuses on the chemistry of the natural products, and where possible links these molecules to pharmacological modes of action. Students and professionals interested in the ethnobotany, chemistry, pharmacology and biological activites of species used medicinally in Turkey will benefit from this book.

About the Author:

Professor Ufuk Koca-Caliskan

Professor Ufuk Koca-Caliskan received her diploma from Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy in Turkey. She has a Master degree in Biochemistry (Washington State University, USA); PhD degree in Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (University of Florida, USA). She now holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmaceutical Botany, at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University. She is an expert in Phytotherapy and Aromatherapy and a long interest in plants and their healing properties, collecting folk medicine recepies at an early age from healers.

Ufuk studied the production and enhancing anticancer compound podophyllotoxin derivatives in linum flavum and L. usitatissimum callus and suspension cultures, followed by a project dealing with the decreasing bitter taste of grapefruit via manipulation of the flavonoid pathway by means of gene transfer during her PhD at the University of Florida. After her PhD, she returned to the Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy and established a plant tissue culture laboratory She also served as an Administrator at her University as a vice dean and dean of the Graduate School of Health Sciences, where she established nonthesis programs in Nursing and Phytotherapy, and worked on to increase the success and the quality of the education in Health Sciences. She also served as the ERASMUS constitutional coordinator for 4 years at the University.

Ufuk serving as an editorial or review board member on various international and national journals published more than 60 papers, including 15 book chapters.

Esra Akkol

Prof. Dr. Esra Küpeli Akkol was born in Turkey. She got her Bachelor of Science degree from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University, Turkey, and got her Ph.D. degree in Pharmacognosy Department from Gazi University. She is currently a Professor at Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacognosy. She served in many capacities in her field, including service on several editorial boards and numerous review committees for journals such as the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Molecules, Current Neuropharmacology, Journal of Pharmacy Sciences, International Journal of Genuine Traditional Medicine, Advances in Pharmacological Sciences, Evidence-Based Complementary Alternative Medicine, and The Open Pain Journal. She has conducted 58 projects and 15 theses at Gazi University. She has 264 published articles in SCI International Journals, 15 articles in National Journals, and 12 chapters in International Books. She is a member of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA) and the Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE). She has received many awards, including Scientist Training Group Scholarships for master and doctorate programs provided by TUBITAK; the Honor Award of Gazi University in 2011 given by Gazi University; "The Scientific Encouragement Award" in 2007 and "Science Award" in 2018 given by Pharmacy Academy, the Association of Turkish Pharmacists; the Patent Encouragement Award of Gazi University; and the Best Oral and Poster Presentation Awards in scientific meetings worldwide. Prof. Dr. Esra Küpeli Akkol is currently working as the Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at Gazi University, Faculty of Pharmacy.

Research interests

Her research combines pharmacognosy and pharmacological approaches to focus on

  • Bioassay-guided isolation of active constituents: Phytochemistry and Analytical Pharmacognosy
  • Anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and antirheumatic activities of folk remedies and synthesized compounds
  • Wound healing assessment of medicinal plants and their secondary metabolites
  • Antidepressant and sedative activities of folk remedies and synthetic compounds
  • Isolation of the natural compounds from the medicinal plants used against gynecological and metabolic disorders
  • Anti-carcinogenic assessment of medicinal plants and their secondary metabolites
